Amazon.ca Editors' Pick: Best Books of 2012

A literary thriller revealed in multiple time frames, The Twelve is a suspenseful tale of the human capacity for sacrifice and the transformative power of renewal. In the present day: As three strangers attempt to navigate the chaos cast upon civilization by a U.S. government experiment gone wrong, their destinies intertwine. More than a hundred years in the future: Amy, Peter, Alicia and the others introduced in The Passage pinpoint the weaknesses of the twelve original vampires . . . even as they confront a betrayal by one of their own.

“Cronin is the thinking man’s horror writer. Think of an amalgamation of Stephen King (horror writing) Dean Koontz (character genius) Tom Clancy (military language, etc.) and Anne Rice (vampire creepers) with a flare all his splendorific own—and you might be able to pinpoint Cronin’s gift.”
Daily Herald

Praise for The Passage
"[A] magnificent beast of a new novel."
—TIME

"A blockbuster . . . astutely plotted and imaginative."
The New York Times Book Review

"Cronin's unguessable plot and appealing characters will seize your heart and mind."
Parade

"Great storytelling . . . vital, tender and compelling."

"Addictive, terrifying and deeply satisfying. Not only is this one of the year's best thrillers; it's one of the best of the past decade--maybe one of the best ever."
Men's Journal

Mr. Cronin seems intent more intent on creating a world than writing a novel. It reminded me of George Lucas’s last three Star Wars that were prequels to the first three. More effort was expended in explaining the world of the first three than telling a story. The same with The Twelve. It starts about 90 years before the beginning of the plague, jumping through time and place collecting characters for the final battle of the twelve at the end of the book. Everytime I’d become interested in a story taking place in one time and setting, Mr. Cronin would jump to another. It’s all incredibly convoluted and ultimately pointless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sequel! Dec 25 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Without spoiling the plot, I have to say that The Twelve was a worthy sequel to The Passage. After reading The Passage, a number of unanswered questions were left lingering and while The Twelve doesn't answer all of them, it certainly illuminates certain key issues. Highly recommended. Good, entertaining read.

I eagerly awaited this sequel to "The Passage". However, I made the mistake of reading The Twelve without re-reading The Passage. I assumed that there would be some flashbacks to help orient the reader with the many existing plot lines. Normally I am annoyed when a subsequent book in a series rehashes a bunch of storyline from a previous book, but this story is so complex I would have welcomed it in The Twelve. Instead, I was lost throughout much of the book, which transformed a brilliant story into a tedious read. I imagine that the first two books will need to be re-read in order to fully enjoy the third, upon its release. If it wasn't for this fact, the book would have scored 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, colourful read
I was able to read this without rereading The Passage but if I'd had it on hand (who borrowed it??) I would have happily reread it first. Good books, both of 'em.

4.0 out of 5 stars Look evil in the eye, and keep turning the pages
It's a definite page-turner, in some ways allegorical, and in some ways a warning. Yes it's about vampires, so that makes it maybe more interesting or an easier read, but... Read more

I loved The Passage. This book was disappointing in comparison. Too much time and story line jumping. I found myself skimming over paragraphs....
