Colleen's desire to create a cook book on vegan entertaining came out of a passion to offer ideas, tips, and tools for occasions that have become meat-, egg-, and dairy centric. She has remained true to her mission of compassion and offered recipes and menus for the holidays that are free of animal exploitation.
One of the things that I love most about Colleen's book, The Vegan Table, is the organization of the book. Not only are the menus and parties systematically grouped by season but also by the size and formality of the occasion. Colleen has recipes and menus for romantic (or platonic) dinners for two, casual meals for four to six, and formal dining from six to ten. And if that is not enough there are menus for special occasions and excuses to party which include buffets, appetizers and finger foods.
Want to fancy-up your party? The seasonal design of the of the menu extends beyond cooking adding simple design touches to your home when you entertain. Not only that but ever wonder what flowers you can include on your plate? Colleen lets you know what flowers are edible.

The best thing is, anyone can make these recipes. You don't have to be a seasoned chef -- I'm fairly new to cooking and I made the sweet potato and peanut butter stew -- it was so delicious I couldn't believe I'd done it myself. The instructions are easy to follow, the ingredients easy to obtain - the results will please anyone - even meat-eaters.
If you are a vegan you simply must have this book. If you are not a vegan, give the book a try and see what you've been missing!
One thing that bothered me when I first bought it was the slightly schizophrenic way of putting the recipes together - or so this was my immediate impression. However, upon reading and using the book the recipes are put together in a way that is easy to read and with menu recommendations, which is excellent! The normal organization for a cookbook is for the appetizers, entrees and side dishes to go together, and while The Vegan Table maintains this, it is exceptional for specifically placing complementary meals in groups. Thanks Colleen!
One thing I missed from Colleen's "Joy of Vegan Baking" book was the enormously entertaining and enlightening introduction regarding Vegan replacements. For example in her baking book she included information on why certain egg and milk replacements work and when they are good to use, etc. I would have liked to see this with cheese/meat replacements - for the information value only.
All in all, great book - highly recommended!
