Yet another "Greatest Hits" collection from Billy Idol,
By Darla 1 (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself (CD/DVD) (Audio CD)
While no longer the MTV-superstar of the 80's, Billy Idol continues to turn out the occaisional piece of new material and package it in a 'Greatest Hits' collection. This disc has all your favourites in one place and, for those new to Billy Idol, it's a great place to start. Long time fans, however, already own all the Albums, 12" singles, 45's (yes, remember them?)and video's. If you want the new material, you will just have to buy the disc.

Idolize Billy Idol,
By
This review is from: The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself (Audio CD)
Let me start by saying that, as a child, my first musical interest was the music of The Beach Boys. For a few years after that discovery, I really didn't find anything else that caught my attention, until I heard Billy Idol. There was just something about the heavier tone of the music in comparison to Brain Wilson's boys that grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I give Billy Idol full credit for steering me in the direction of heavy music. At any rate though, looking back, there isn't really all that much about Billy Idol's tunes that are heavy. More often than not, the songs take the form of synth-driven pop songs, which really is unfortunate. It's not that these songs are particularly weak or anything; when grouped with bands like Depeche Mode instead of hard rock contemporaries, these songs are very well written and performed. I just have to warn the hard rock purists that more than half of the songs on this compilation completely stray from rock music. When the record really shines, as has already been implied, is during the real rock tracks. Songs like "Rebel Yell" and "Shock To The System" are full of excellent hard rock riffs played with a unique and driving electric guitar tone. Here, Idol abandons the synthpop croon for a punk rock anger and intensity that suit him much better, in my opinion. It really is a shame that this compilation doesn't contain a better balance between synthpop and rock songs; I might suggest that this inbalance could be remedied by avoiding compilations and stick to Idol's studio albums from different eras. Personally, I have now explored a variety of different genres of music and now appreciate both styles, so this compilation gives me a perfect summary of Idol's work. The bottom line is that anyone coming into this record from a hard rock background will likely find himself skipping a lot of tracks, unless he is open to cathcy, new age synthpop as well. I also feel like I should address the benefits of choosing this greatest hits release over his previous hits packages. The new songs added are more of the rock variety, which, in my opinion, puts this compilation above the others. The tracklists are largely identical though, and none of the differing tracks are make or break affairs. RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of hard rock and punk with open minds, fans of new age bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and Duran Duran, fans of industrial rock like Nine Inch Nails
