Lover of Life, Singer of Songs is the imprint created by Brian May when he inscribed the statue of Freddie Mercury that is found in Montreux, Switzerland. Not much of a better title could have been used for this album. "The Very Best of.." is one of those special albums that collects 10 years of work, and then adds on with various remixes made post 1991. There may be some key songs missing here (For example, where is "Let's Turn it On?") at least in my opinion, and some odd additions (Such as the piano version of "Guide Me Home". It sounds nice, but is way out of context on this kind of album. Or the various remixes. Do we really need 6 different versions of "Love Kills"?? All that being said, this is a great addition to any Queen or Freddie Mercury fan's music collection. Really though, emphasis on "addition". If you already have the 2000 Collection Box set, skip out on this one. There really isn't anything new that wasn't available there, save for a few remixes and the "Bad Circulation" version of Mr. Bad Guy. And if you have only this album, consider picking up some of his other solo work (such as "Barcelona" or "Mr. Bad Guy") to get the full effect of how interesting his solo career was.

This album gets 4 stars (The music, however, gets 5+) simply because, with all the available music for a 2-CD set, it fell a little flat on delivery. Still, though, if you buy this you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freddie's great as always, not keen on remixing other people's songs Sep 6 2010

I love Freddie Mercury and I love the music on this CD. What I object to is all this remixing going on and changing the original sound intended by Freddie. I prefer to listen to his music just the way he wrote and performed it. His talent stands on its own. I hesitate to buy these types of CDs, but there are some songs on this CD that were not remixed. I think people need to have the choice of which to buy, the original recordings or the remixes. I would be willing to bet that the original recordings would far outsell the remixed versions. Let's preserve Freddie's music exactly as he recorded and intended it to be. He had the most incredible and beautiful voice and his music was so very unique. Buyer beware, most of this CD are remixed versions, however, I feel it is still worth owning and any Freddie Mercury fan will still want it for their collection. The five stars are for Freddie and his music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad Oct 5 2006
By Casey Johnson - Published on Amazon.com

It amazes me that they even tried to release a GH for Freddie. He only released two albums and a handful of singles. However, it's a pretty good collection for Freddie fans, but it is marred by too many remixes. I would suggest the following tracks:

I Can Hear Music

Goin' Back

Made in Heaven (I prefer the version done with Queen)

I Was Born to Love You (same as above)

Foolin' Around (Original version)

Your Kind of Lover

Mr. Bad Guy (the version from "The Great Pretender")

There Must Be More to Life Than This

Living on my Own (ORIGINAL version)

Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow

Barcelona

Guide Me Home

How Can I Go On

Excercises in Free Love

New York (demo)

The Great Pretender (the guitar version from "The Great Pretender")

Time ("The Great Pretender" version)

In My Defence

Guide Me Home (performed by Thierry Lang)

That's just my opinion, though.

Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest male singers of the twentieth century and this CD showcases his excellent repertoire of music. Plus Amazon sold it at a great price.
