I've been a fan of Diamond for years, and I've owned other Greatest Hits complilations such as 20 Golden Greats (from the 70s), and His Very Best (from the 80s.) Both of these have "Live Versions" of certain songs, as opposed to the studio versions, which bothered me. When the Essential Neil Diamond was released a few years back, I got my hopes up until I saw that it also had live versions of certain songs. Then I recently saw this brand new "Very Best Of" CD. All I can say is.. FINALLY. For any casual Neil Diamond fan like myself, who doesn't own his string of albums, this compilation finally includes STUDIO versions of all the songs featured on it. Sure, there may be a few people out there who probably feel that a couple more songs (I Thank The Lord For The Nightime, Heartlight) could've been included in place of the two more recent tracks that are on this CD. However, I think the inclusion of these newer songs illustrates how Neil Diamond's career came full-circle, and demonstrates that he was still relevant and writing great songs at the turn of the 21st century. This is a solid Best Of complilation that I highly recommend. It's the one I've been waiting for all this time.
