If You Only Want One Peter Allen CD --- THIS IS IT!,

Ce commentaire est de: The Very Best of Peter Allen: The Boy from Down Under (Audio CD)
I recently bought a $3 DVD at Wal-Mart called "Peter Allen: The Boy From Oz", which is a very well made (although it seems low budget) biography about this singer/songwriter/entertainer. Watching that made me want to check out his CD's.Allen fans say his live stuff is his best, so I bought one live CD and this hits CD. For me, I think this CD is all I need. The live one's fine, it shows that he put on a fine, high energy show, but THIS is the CD I'll be listening to. Lots of good, well crafted songs. Allen was a talented man who could write very sensitive songs. There's often a sense of drama/theatricality and a high brow musical sensibility (think of a 1970's Cole Porter). Much of this music sounds like it belongs in a previous era. During the 1970's and 80's when these songs originally came out, they were somewhere between Broadway and MOR pop. I think some people love this (apparently he had a HUGE fan base of middle aged women), and others may find it too campy (younger folks, especially in today's cynical and sarcastic society). I just think the guy was talented, wrote some great songs and performed extremely well. You should recognize some of the songs, although they were hits when recorded by other, better known artists... similar to listening to Burt Bacharach's original version after hearing Dionne Warwick's hit version. This CD is a newer release with good quality sound. It seemed better than other Allen compilations, and the price is good. I'd recommend this if you already know and like his music, or if you're curious and just want to check out one CD only.

Perhaps it was only an illusion--a theatrical trick to delight us momentarily--but Peter Allen's life looked like a carnival, a traveling, ramshackle show of glitz and carefree hoofing. That said, he's surprisingly serious (in the singer/songwriter mold of Billy Joel and Elton John) on the early tracks such as "Honest Queen" and the shiveringly bracing "Tenterfield Saddler" (an ode to his grandfather). When disco came in circa 1976, Allen's style changed dramatically, though he never stopped writing quality music in this idiom--and he never lost his nakedly romantic soul. This Best Of CD is addictive and wonderful to hear! One wants it to go on & on--like Allen's non-stop energy--but all good things have to end. It's a shame because Peter Allen was an entertainer of the highest magnitude...he had so much of his spirit left to give us. A-

There is quite a number of good tunes here.He also wrote songs for other artists and had success with songs like The Best That You Can Do from the movie Arthur. He rolled out the hit's,and my earliest memories of him were all these National adds.Next thing i knew he was just gone, sadly he died in 1992.You heard his music from time to time,so there is quite a few songs here i knew upon getting this album. I Still Call Australia Home probably is his crowning glory,i have heard that song by other people on adds over the years. I think this a nice review, but i better check with my editor. |
