I too bought this book after having seen the PBS special "Lose seven foods, feel great fast", and found the regimen a lot more strict than the PBS special lead you to believe. First of all, the idea that it is "seven" foods is ludicrous. The "seven" foods are components of just about every processed food on the market. Also, the PBS program was quick to show you easy substitutions (i.e. eat hummous and veggies instead!), whereas the book was pretty strict on meal timing, organics, etc.

Having said all that... This program totally worked for me. I lost 9 pounds the first week, and 2- 2.5 pounds per week thereafter. I discovered that gluten was the culprit for me. I went a month without pasta, without bread, without flour, crackers anything and then when I finally reintroduced them, within 2 days I was pushing them away because the headaches, joint pain and bloating were so pronounced. Ditto dairy- after years of acne and oily hair, after a month on the program my hair and skin are fantastic! I feel better than I have in years, and that is real motivation to keep going.

I think this program works well for me because I love cooking, love healthy foods and have the time and motivation to plan and execute meals. I think that vegetarians (I am mostly vegetarian) may struggle with it because she is so adamant about "lean clean protein" in the form of beef, fish etc. Also, it is very all or nothing- not a book which advocates moderation. Despite all these caveats- I've got to say no other diet book has ever had anywhere near the impact on me that this one has.


Just wanted to add an update. I started this plan January 1, 2013. It is March 23 and so far I have lost 26 pounds. (ultimate goal 52). The food I am eating is so flavourful, and I feel so good that it has really not been much of a struggle. I think I'd upgrade this to five stars now.

I had seen an 'infomercial' on PBS about this program and of course it was more legit with PBS endorsing the message. So I bought the book and found it difficult to get through the self-promotion of JJ Virgin. While most of the details are out there in any number of books, I haven't found the time to read them any and thought this would be a good summary. With Virgin's constant reminder that she is a miracle worker, I became distracted from the valuable information in the book. I have stopped using the foods as per her recommendation and had excellent results around pain management. There is some good info to be reminded of in the book but the foods you can eat/menus could use more work - otherwise it becomes difficult to sustain, even for 21 days.
Good content, lousy read.

I watched this woman on Canada AM and was immediately drawn to her message about weight loss and food intolerance. I ordered the book immediately! Not overly excited about the title as I have struggled with my weight all my life and refuse to try another diet but this is so much MORE than that!
It is a simple read and I agree with the other reviewer Deb Dorsey,that there is more than enough self promotion throughout the pages,but getting beyond that and extracting the real facts is easy to do. I sat with a high-lighter and pulled out all of the important, useful information.
JJ Virgin's shake products are not available in Canada at this time so there is a little modification to the program but this was not difficult to do it is all just a matter of demographics. The concept remains the same.
I began Cycle 1 two weeks ago and have already lost 10 pounds! I think that the best part of this is that after buying the book and connecting with her online there is endless support. She follows up with encouraging videos and tracking information. She is there to answer any questions. I am trying it the JJ way!

There is a lot of useful information in this book. I have done the first 21 days. I was surprised that I did not have any cravings. Because I was not over weight to begin with I have lost only 4 pounds so far. There were a few conflicting items such as which food group should be reintroduced first. But she has a website that is quite useful and it allows you to send a question and have someone return the answer.

I'm hoping that after completing all 7 weeks that I will know for sure which food groups I should eliminate from my regular diet.

I have read other books telling me why I shouldn't have certain foods but they never really gave a plan as to how I should make those changes. This book has a solid plan and if you are really serious about your health it is all laid out for you to try.
