Flawed Attempt to Make the Pope Speak in Soundbites, Nov 15 2010
By Kevin M. Derby - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Virtues (Hardcover)
"The Virtues" by Benedict XVI is a disappointing follow up from Our Sunday Visitor's publishing wing after their splendid editions of "The Apostles" and "The Fathers" by the Holy Father. "The Virtues" is a collection of quotes from the Holy Father drawn from addresses, encyclicals and homilies, lumped together by the chief virtues--faith, charity, etc. As in any group of quotes, there is some repetition. Even worse, there seems to be no order for the quotes besides being included under some chapters. This makes the book better suited for quick glances than actually reading large portions at a time. That's a problem. Benedict XVI is, while one of the most inspiring and inspired minds of our times, always pushing against our times--unlike many world leaders, he does not speak in soundbites. To understand what Benedict means and says, you have to dig deeper. While some of the quotes are charming, many of them will leave the reader wanting more. A bad book? By no means. However, the reader will find most of this material in other sources--and would be advised to do so. The Holy Father is far, far deeper than this would indicate.

Key Virtue Info, Jun 11 2011
By Sanctus - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Virtues (Hardcover)
Thank you Pope Benedict! This book is definitely worth reading, studying, and using as a tool to deepen prayer. It is helping me to deepen my practice of The Virtues. It is an edited work, all words of Pope Benedict XVI, focused on his wisdom of the virtues - how they work together and individually. Examples of virtue actualized in real life today are included also. An amazingly "real" hands on book, especially considering the vast intellectual knowledge of the author theologian, Pope B XVI.

Become Morally Responsible, July 19 2011
By Gina O - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Virtues (Hardcover)
In his usual informative and concise style, Pope Benedict XVI lays out morally responsible behavior. In this age of morally questionable conduct, everyone should read this wonderful book. It is a blueprint for anyone seeking answers.
