I'll get right to it...Loved the tv show, needed more. Bought the Compendium due to its affordable price (compared to the issues, omnibus', and books). I then, once again, needed more. So I purchased books 5, 6 and 7. I am all caught up now, still wanting more. The compendium is a great price for what you get in return, but if you like to keep or collect these types of books, then you might want to buy the individual books. They look nice on the shelf and they are well priced here compared to the stores.

FYI: this compendium is like buying books 1, 2, 3 and 4.

I've watched Seasons 1-2 of the tv series before I started reading this and I gotta say, the graphic novel is even better ! A LOT of things happen in the first 8 chapters and the author is not afraid of doing anything to keep us really interested. I just received the Compendium 2 (extremely fast shipping again, got it the day before it was out) which I had pre-ordered, and already read the first 2 chapters. Like some said, if you like the tv show and you like graphic novels, just buy the 2 compendiums, you won't regret it. The only regret I have is that I'm going to have to wait a long time to be able to read compendium #3 :P I'l probably end up buying them separately

Getting the compilation is the way to go. But the book is very heavy and doesn't sit well unless you have it in your lap or on a table. Don't expect to be able to cosy up to it in bed.

And why would you? It's bound to give you night terrors! This book is very graphic, but well written. It doesn't hold back any punches. Prepare to be disgusted with humanity, in a realistic fashion. I will never be the same. And neither will any of the people I push this book on!

This is hands down the greatest zombie fiction that I have ever read. It's like a Romero film that never ends with all the gore, story and kickass characters that is to be expected in a great zombie epic. There is a despute about if the switching of the artist for the novel (from Tony Moore, to Charlie Adlard) lessened the quality of the novel or gave it a lesser artistic value somehow. I'm here to say, it absolutely does not! Both guys are brillant at drawing for graphic novels and now that there are some many volumes, I'm sure Charlie Adlard will be the one everyone thinks of when it comes to this graphic novel. But don't let me try to convince you. Take a look at the WD Volume 1 (Tony Moores artwork)and compare it with any of the following volumes done by Charlie Adlard. Some will agree, some will disagree but one things certain, there is no better zombie fiction out there. And for the price on this compendium that includes the first 48 volumes, it doesn't hurt to take a chance. Believe me, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Obviously it's not only myself and that of fellow reviews who feel this way because it has even caught the attention of the big wigs in hollywood. AMC has bought the rights to the novel and is currently filming the first couple of episodes coming out this fall. So go, run or drag yourself and grab this, you'll be glad you did!

So far hundreds have already reviewed this title so I'm not likely to say anything new or particularly interesting but I did want to put in my handful of bullet points.

* The 12 and 14-year-olds in the house love the television show and enjoy graphic novels so when I got this I thought we could all read it. No way in hell. The show is violent and so is the compendium but the sex and language in the book is just too much. Today's teens may be desensitized to violent stuff going down but the amount of sex and innuendo is just too much. Plus the language is far too... realistic. Great for me, great for them when they're 20.

* When I consider the amount of artwork that went into this thing I'm just flabbergasted. Sure some people like to draw but this is 1000+ pages. Wow. You have to respect that.

* I'm a bit of an anal retentive book nerd so when I got this I was in mortal fear of the binding. It's huge. It's heavy. I expected a split spine within 200 pages. Not so. I've come to the end and the binding is as perfect as ever. Color me relieved.

* I've seen the series. I've read the first compendium. On the series the characters do seem somewhat better developed; probably because it's been pretty hard for me to tell people apart. In the compendium the theme seems to be better preserved. We seem to see these people spiraling down into depravity with greater acuteness. Could be my imagination too but that's just my sense.

* In general I don't do a lot of graphic novels and it took me a while to adjust to the reading order for the bubbles and I still don't pay nearly as much attention as I should to the illustrations. I'm just reading bubbles 90% of the time.

Excellent comic! I devoured the whole volume over a few nights of reading and am looking forward to the next compendium, which should be out late this year (2012).

This book is very weighty, but easy enough to read sitting up with a pillow on my lap to support it. The binding was good and square, and the quality of the pages was decent.
