a good little reference guide for all the characters you meet in the Walking Dead universe. I used it to remind me who was who. One small tip: if you don't like spoilers, wait to read this until after Volume 14.

Good stuff Jan. 12 2012

DO NOT read this book until you finish issue #84 of the comic books. Unless you want to know who is dead, and how they died. Very well put together with great details of the characters. Once you read passed #84, this is a good refresher and character reference guide.

Not particularly detailed, but worth getting if you are a collector Jan. 25 2012
By IronChefMIk - Published on Amazon.com

I love The Walking Dead, but just a heads up there is not a whole lot of in depth information in here. If you already have all the issues/trades/book/etc, then it may be worth getting just as a collectors' item (which is why I got it). But know that there is not any new information in here about anything behind the creation of the comic or any of the characters. It is mostly an alphabetized short description of each character (big and small) who has appeared in the graphic novel. So basically if you are a huge fan and want to add it to your collection, get it. If you just happen to like the graphic novel and don't care about adding to your collection, then there is not enough information in here to warrant purchasing it.

I wanted to give it more stars, but it is just not detailed enough to warrant it in my opinion.

Official Handbook of the Walking Dead Universe... Jan. 21 2012
By Erik Olson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Back in the early 80s when I was an avid comic collector, I devoured the mini-series "Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe," a detailed guide to just about every superhero and supervillain on the Marvel roster. I'm currently a fan of "The Walking Dead" trade paperbacks, and this is a good reference for the series.

FYI: Just in case you're looking for information on the TV show, this book doesn't cover that incarnation of "The Walking Dead" (although a marketing blurb on the back calls the Survivors' Guide a "can't-miss supplement" to it). We're dealing with the comic book saga here. That means you'll see bios for characters from the very first Walking Dead comic all the way to the Alexandria storyline (around issue 84 or up to the events in the "No Way Out" Volume 14 TP).

The format is somewhat similar to (although less detailed than) the Marvel Universe handbook mini-series. Each character gets a mug shot, some action scenes, vital statistics, first/last issue number appearance, and an essay appropriate to their longevity. For example, a short-lived character like Arnold (one of Maggie's brothers) gets one page, while a mainstay such as Rick rates multiple pages of exposition.

As with any character-bio one-shot or mini-series, "The Walking Dead: Survivors' Guide" will grow more obsolete as time goes by ("We Find Ourselves" Volume 15 TP is already on the stands). But it's a fun look back for long-time fans of the comic series and a helpful catch-up reference for newbies.

Pretty Pointless July 12 2012
By OK Records - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is pretty pointless. What is consists of is page after page of character bios from the comic book series, and also lists their status, such as dead, alive, or zombified. Not only can you get this information for free at the Walking Dead Comic Wiki, but at this point a lot of the information is out dated. This book is ment to compliment issues one through eighty-four, but at the time of this writing, the series is on issue 100, which makes a lot of the information contained in this book obsolete, and as a result, inaccurate.

This is the kind of book that should be written after a series concludes, not at the hight of its popularity. It would be a great refresher guide, and a good piece of source material, but again, only if it remains relevant to the characters being referenced, which it doesn't. I speculate there will be an updated version of the survival guide at some point, but again, if the series hasn't concluded, it too will become obsolete.

Furthermore, if you've read the comics, there really isn't any reason to buy this book because you already know what happened to the characters. On the other hand, there is no reason to read this book if you're not going to read the comics. So, like I said in my very first sentence, this book is pretty pointless.

Doesn't really add anything new or insightful Dec 18 2013
By Joe Danville - Published on Amazon.com

I'm a HUGE fan of the comics and the series, but this volume doesn't add anything. If you lost track of a character and want to get a quick update, then yeah buy it. Personally, Id rather reread the comics. And this book is just related to the comics, not the TV show.
