From Publishers Weekly

Taking a well-worn genre—flesh-eating zombies overrun the world and the unlucky surviving humans must deal with the gruesome aftermath—and approaching it from a purely character-driven point of view propels this series into the spotlight from out of nowhere. This collection of the first six issues of the ongoing series opens with police officer Rick Grimes awakening from a gunshot-induced coma. From here, he's immediately dragged into a world where dangerous revenants are shambling amok without any sort of an explanation. From the moment Grimes comes to, it's a harrowing battle to avoid hordes of decomposing zombies and a hope-against-all-odds search for his missing family. Grimes makes his way to Atlanta, the nearest large city where there may be other living people, and events take several unexpected turns upon his arrival, as he meets up with a rural encampment of survivors. Of course, as in recent hit movies 28 Days Later... and Dawn of the Dead, the last humans may turn out to be as much a danger as the zombies. Forceful scripting that gives the book a strong grounding in reality, crisp b&w artwork, a shocking final sequence and brisk, gory proceedings elevate this book from the trash heap of pedestrian horror comics.

Book Description

An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best zombie stories I've ever read, Jun 1 2006

This review is from: The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye (Paperback)
The Walking Dead is by far one of the most unique and frightening zombie tales I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

The world has been overrun by the dead, and humanity has all but vanished from the face of the earth. Rick Grimes awakens from his three month long coma to find that he has been abandoned in his hospital bed, and that in fact he is the only thing living withinhis home town.

Despite the similarity between this story line and the premise for "28 Days Later", where a man awakens from a coma only to find London completely destroyed, that is as far as the likness extends.

Alone and uninformed Rick makes his way out of his abandoned home town in search of his missing family, and any possible remaining pockets of humanity.

Without giving away the rest of the story, this is a truly engaging and engrossing story. It has everything: violence, romance, and alot more violence.

Any zombie fan worth their salt should seriously pick up this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars the epic zombie movie we always wanted to see, Jun 7 2004
This review is from: The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye (Paperback)
i am a huge zombie fan and i love romeros work among others, and there was always the problem of not having the best actors possible and the budgets being next to nothing, but i had in my mind a epic zombie tale..this is it!

we have great writing that makes us grow to love the characters and feel for them, there are plenty of moments with just people being people, it's not all gore and zombies, that is why so many non horror fans love this.

but worry not horror/zombie fans, there is plenty of attacks, cities full of zombies living dead horror, no budget worries here, the artist can simply fill the page with as many as he wants, and the art is fantastic, very realistic with a ever so slight cartoony edge that never takes away from the impact of the story, and these are some of the best zombies i have ever seen.

it's all balanced out so well, it keeps you coming back for more, i hope they release more since the series is at issue 8 now and this collects the first 6.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Graphic Novel Like No Other, April 22 2012
By
Koopa90 (Cape Breton, NS.) - See all my reviews
It's truly amazing how much THE WALKING DEAD Vol. 1 sets up the atmosphere of being a survivor in a crumbling world.
Within the first few pages, there is barely any text aside from 'Hello?' and odd grunts and gasps. The lack of dialogue, accompanying the stills of a decaying city really just sets the mood and puts you in Rick's shoes of Helplessness as he awakens to a world devastated by death and destruction.

I was one of those who saw the TV series first. I knew of the Comics, but I was already into the series.
Season 2 recently ended on a cliff-hanger and just left me wanting more. So I gave in to buying the first in the multiple WALKING DEAD volumes. And so far, wow, Vol. 1 alone covered Season 1 and 2 in short form.
(Or if you read the comics first, then you could look at it as the Tv series extended the original story)

This books a good read, worth the money.
I managed to read through it in just 3 hours, I had to put it down half way as I felt I was getting through too fast.
But I couldn't put it down for long so ... 3 hours was the best I could squeeze it into, reading as slow as I could manage.

Now adding Vol. 2 to my wishlist.
