Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The Holy War fomented by the mysterious prophet Maithanet between "the two great faiths of Inrithism and Fanimry" in The Darkness That Comes Before (2004), the critically acclaimed first book in the epic fantasy trilogy by Canadian author Bakker, explodes in this compelling, if overly long, sequel set in the medieval world of Eärwa. Like many a traditional historical chronicle, the book mentions a plethora of people and places only in passing, but the all-too-human tale of love, hatred and justice, centered on the sorcerer Drusas Achamian and the monk Anasûrimbor Kellhus (aka "the prince of nothing") and their respective harlot lady friends with hearts of gold, Esmenet and Serwë, keeps the pages turning. The final cinematic scene, of a vast landscape filled with enormous armies, nicely sets the stage for book three of this daringly unconventional series in the Tolkien mold.

Review

'Leaves most of the competition trailing' GUARDIAN; '[R. Scott Bakker is a] class act like George R. R. Martin, or his fellow Canadians Steven Erikson and Guy Gavriel Kay. He gets right away from the 'downtrodden youth becoming king' aspect of epic fantasy in his very impressive first novel - The Darkness That Comes Before. No clunky analogy of medieval Europe here. Odd, fascinating characters in a world full of trouble and sorcery.' '10 Authors to Watch' SFX Magazine 'Compelling... Keeps the pages turning. The final cinematic scene, of a vast landscape filled with enormous armies, nicely sets the stage for book three of this daringly unconventional series in the Tolkien mold.' 5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible novel, Jan 31 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Warrior Prophet (Hardcover)
This second tome of The Prince of Nothing series is a more than worthy successor of The Darkness that Comes Before. With the Holy War on the march, all the characters briefly introduced in Book One come to life here and play their sometimes surprising role. This novel is much more action-packed than the first ; whereas The Darkness that Comes Before comprised one major battle, The Warrior-Prophet is filled with a lot of battles, each as gripping as the Battle of Kiyuth - yet the essential elements of the first tome, such as the philosophical background, are still very present. In answer to a previous review, whereas this second novel does show some despair and suffering as the Consult's disastrous plans are set in motion and the Holy War is put to test, there is also and foremost hope beyond despair, friendship beyond loss ; there is much more to this novel than betrayal and starvation. If you liked The Darkness that Comes Before, you just can't miss The Warrior-Prophet !

5.0 out of 5 stars Best novel of the year, Jan 7 2005
By
This review is from: Warrior Prophet (Hardcover)
I drove 2 hours to canada to get this book since it won't come out in the states for while yet and it was well worth it. I can see how this book might be difficult for some, the main charecters are certainly not likeable in traditional sense. If your willing to open your mind to different type of story however this is incredible read. It is reminiscent of George R. R. martins A song of ice fire in the demands it puts on its readers and in the rewards you receive. The world is incredible well devolped on one of the most truly distinctive and imaginative worlds in fantasy. The plot is fascinating and, the pacing excellent, the charecters are multi dimensional well realized, and the prose is brillant. One of the most amazing things about this book is how he his able to make you see charecter completely differently depending on the point of veiw of the chapter.
All in all the best fantasy novell in quite some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's all about the characters, Jun 17 2008
By
This review is from: Warrior Prophet (Hardcover)
This book is part of the only fantasy series of novels that is really about the characters . . . or at least, in my opinion, that is the case. Bakker develops his characters through great triumphs and crushing defeats. Through it all, you find yourself empathizing with the characters. This empathy is at times wonderful as you feel the joys of those about whom you are reading. But often, this empathy is disturbing as you experience the devastation of those in the narrative.

Bakker's work will illuminate and expose parts of the reader's character. It will enoble you and debase you as you realize how you are like those within the author's story. It is impossible not to respond to these very real, very human, very flawed persons that Bakker introduces us to. And it is impossible that you walk away from Bakker's work without responding either in revulsion or exhileration.

This truly is art.
