Book Description

When other girls her age were experiencing their first crushes, Melissa Sue Anderson was receiving handwritten marriage proposals from fans as young, and younger, than she was. When other girls were dreaming of their first kiss, Melissa was struggling through hers in front of a camera. From age eleven in 1974 until she left the show in 1981, Melissa Anderson literally grew up before the viewers of Little House on the Prairie.

Melissa, as Mary, is remembered by many as “the blind sister”—and she was the only actor in the series to be nominated for an Emmy. In The Way I See It, she takes readers onto the set and inside the world of the iconic series created by Michael Landon, who, Melissa discovered, was not perfect, as much as he tried to be. In this memoir she also shares her memories of working with guest stars like Todd Bridges, Mariette Hartley, Sean Penn, Patricia Neal, and Johnny Cash.

In addition to stories of life on the set, Melissa offers revealing looks at her relationships off-set with her costars, including the other Melissa (Melissa Gilbert) and Alison Arngrim, who portrayed Nellie Oleson on the show. And she relates stories of her guest appearances on iconic programs such as The Love Boat and The Brady Bunch.

Filled with personal, revealing anecdotes and memorabilia from the Little House years, this book is also a portrait of a child star who became a successful adult actress and a successful adult. These are stories from “the other Ingalls sister” that have never been told.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Much of an Autobiography., Nov 10 2011
This review is from: The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House (Hardcover)
I gave this book one star because there is no option for minus stars or no stars!!
This is the lamest autobiography I have ever read. More than half the book was dedicated to Little House dialogue line by line. A quater was just who she worked with in different movies during her career. Very much, "I worked with him on this show and it was nice." The last quater was more about the lives of others. She describes Michael Landon's house, family, affair, Melissa Gilbert's behariour at a birthday party and some of the interactions writers and directors and the friction between Karen Grassle and Michael Landon on the set.
There is NOTHING in this autobiography that talks about her parents, siblings, family, life growing up, dating, marriage, moving, having children...nothing. It was the most boring autobiography ever. I read it in two hours because I skipped most of it. I was remarkably disappointed. There are other Little House stars who have written autobiographies I recommend those they are a great read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Highly disapointing, Aug 10 2010
This review is from: The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House (Hardcover)
Although I consider myself the ultimate Little House fan, Melissa Anderson's book was a bore. I couldn't wait to read it and it completely let me down. It was very poorly written. I was also hoping to hear more about the people she worked with during the Little House years, but when mentioning the name of an actor she was working with, the most detail she would give was that the person was "nice", or "competent". Not that I wanted juice on her fellow castmates, but I was certainly curious to know more about them working together! She mentions Melissa Gilbert only once or twice which I found odd as they were in so many scenes together. I was hoping to hear more about her experiences filming different scenes, instead of rehashing each episode line by line. Each chapter just seems to be a word by word reprinting of the script's dialogue. A big yawn when you already know the dialogue like the back of your hand!
It does sound to me as though Melissa Anderson is a very happy, blessed, content woman, so I am not sure what the other reviewer is talking about. As always, I will remain a huge fan of hers and the show! :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not purchase, May 22 2011

This review is from: The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House (Hardcover)
What a bad book. A total waste of time. In almost every chapter, she just goes through a few episodes - and I mean really - she just describes the actual episode. It appears as if, to write this book, she re-watched episodes of Little House, and transcribed what happened in a few of her favorite episodes. She almost does not touch on what it is to be a child actress. There is one paragraph in the book about her relationship with Michael Landon. She does not go into her personal life, which would be fine, except that's the point of a memoir isn't it?

It is badly written, hard to follow. A total waste of time.
