Product Description

Album Description

2009 release from the Prog Rock supergroup featuring Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse of Spock's Beard, Marillion's Pete Trewavas and Roine Stolt from the Flower Kings. With The Whirlwind, Transatlantic has pulled out all the stops! Their first two albums expanded the boundaries of Progressive Rock with songs like 'Stranger In Your Soul' that span some 30 minutes. Then, nine years later the band comes back with a walloping triumphant record that is one piece of music sprawling over 78 minutes in length! This is unprecedented, and the sheer brilliance of it is that it flows like a Progressive Rock symphony, taking the listener from shadow to glory and back again. What a tremendous whirlwind of music this is!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness They're Back., Nov 20 2009

Okay, I'll admit straight off that I definitely got my expectations jacked up a little too high when I first heard they were working together again. Of all the Neo-Prog I own, their two albums are simply the most outstanding and tuneful of the bunch. What an amazing group.

So when I first heard The Whirlwind, I was a little taken aback: it wasn't as immediate as their previous efforts had been. I was going to have to give it a few more listens to catch the subtleties and appreciate it as a more mature effort than their 1999 and 2000 albums. And so listen I did, and eventually it did start to reveal itself to me.

This piece takes time to absorb, I find, but it's beginning to settle into my head as a very strong and tuneful album. It couldn't be quite as obvious and hook-laden, because they had a story they were trying to tell. In that way, it really is more like a concept album, verging on Rock Opera, given that they all take turns singing (Pete Trewavas sings? Well of course he does, but it happened so rarely previously.), and the lyrics are pretty direct.

I'd say the one disappointment I have with this album is that I have the two disc set, and while I love the covers they did on the second disc,, I'm still not quite enamoured of the four original tracks, which to my ears don't sound very much like Transatlantic so much as studio outtakes. I suppose it couldn't be expected of them to develop these shorter numbers into broader, more 'progressive' pieces, given the work they must have put in on The Whirlwind, but they do feel a bit rushed and out of place. Perhaps I'll learn to appreciate them more on repeated listening.

All in all though, it's a great album, and though it hasn't replaced Bridge Across Forever for me, it certainly isn't a bad follow-up, especially after all this time. Thanks to Neal, Roine, Pete and Mike for making this happen. And seriously, don't be afraid to come to Ontario and perform for us. We won't bite.

Til' the airship sails again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!, Dec 12 2009
This review is from: The Whirlwind (Audio CD)
I never thought they could do something better than the previous records, but they did it.
You must listen to the song as a whole, complete, but you can also listen to the different pieces of it and enjoy each one of them.

Here you can find parts from Dream Theater and parts from the Flower Kings, and you can listen to many more guitars than the previous cds. It seems like Mike Portnoy and Roine Stolt have more power in terms of composition, and the band has gained a lot with that. You will find here epic numbers. I really think this is a masterpiece.

If you want to know more opinions I recomend you to go to progarchives.com. And if you are a big fan of the well-done music, and the prog rock, you don't want to miss this fantastic job. I strongly recommend it

5.0 out of 5 stars If only the mainstream people knew of them, Jun 13 2010

Four every talented musicians, each can sing [or sing well enough]. Each can play multiple instruments [for the most part they do in concert].

The first CD contains a 77+ minute epic [played live in their 2010 city tour]. Carefully intertwined songs with themes that continue throughout the album. As usual, top notch production work. The music tends to follow the Bridge Across Forever music - a bit harder than SMTPe - not quite progressive metal - but close.

The second CD contains 4 studio tracks written by the band [each member doing vocals] as well as 4 [actually 5] cover versions - mostly lesser known and in some cases odd cover versions done by a progressive rock group.
