Book Description

Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agile, Ruth was a dragon of many talents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt that would never amount to anything. But Jaxom knew better, knew he could teach his dragon to fly and to destroy the deadly silver Threads that fell from the sky. Disobeying all rules, Jaxom and Ruth trained in secret. Their illicit flights seemed but a minor disobedience - until they found themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all.

From the Publisher

There are dragons all over Anne McCaffrey's house. Some she's bought, but many have been made for her by adoring fans and given to her as gifts. I don't make dragons, of course. But whenever circumstances allow, I do try to bring her American bacon, something she can't get easily in Ireland, and something which she has taught all her friends there to love, as well! I remember the first time I went to visit her, when she was still living in her old, much smaller but very homey, house. My husband and I arrived at the doorstep, and she immediately began bustling about, frying up some of the bacon we'd brought and sharing a lovely late breakfast with us before sending us off to the hotel for a nap. She made us dinner that night, too--the one and only time in my life that I've actually liked shrimp cocktail. Maybe that's because if you squint your eyes and look sideways, shrimp are kind of dragonlike, and I was eating them in the right company!

This story introduces two new fabulous characters, Lord jaxom and his dragon Ruth. This is truly a great book, and it's interesting storyline and great writing, as well as the bond between Ruth and Jaxom make this a great and wonderful story to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!!, Feb 27 2011

(REAL NAME)
When I finished this book I cried. I cried because it was finished. I was going to miss the white dragon, Ruth and his rider Jaxsom. And then I found that Jaxsom and Ruth saga continued into All The Wyers of Pern. The Dragons of Pern and its people see a beautiful world that backsled from high tech to slower pre tech era. each book you read leaves you questions about this people whose ancestors came from Earth to make a new life. Each book is like a wonderful quest. An adventure you can take in your own home. These should definitely be made in a series of movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Dragonrider book, Aug 9 2003
By
Miriam (Provo, UT, USA) - See all my reviews
This is the first Anne Mc Caffrey book I read. I found it very confusing with turns = years and Weyr = a home for dragons and their riders and other terms. I reccomend that any first time Pern readers read Dragonflight, Dragonquest or Dragonsdawn first.
This book was great with Jaxom developing with a crush and the critisism that Jaxom and Ruth (Jaxom's white dragon) get because never has there been a dragonrider the leader of a hold and Ruth is a runt and white. No dragons are white. In addition to being a white runt, firelizards seem to like Ruth, which makes them unpopular with some holdfolk.
Jaxom and Ruth must learn how to fly and breathe fire together without anyones help.
