He finds refuge in the household of the Widow of Develin and trains as a scholar under an assumed name. The Widow's headstrong daughter, Sophie, takes an interest in him while falling in love with an older scholar with ties to Ambrose's past. In doing so, they become unwitting pawns in the warring factions within the Kingdom. This coming-of-age tale explores the themes of power and the price that's paid for it, revenge and forgiveness, all set in a fully realized medieval world where philosophy and religion dominate. The characters aren't always likable, but sophisticated readers will empathize with their struggles and find themselves drawn into this richly imagined fantasy world. Well-written fantasy novel with some pace problems, April 16 2006

This is the sequel to Mr. Dickinson's Cup of the World, which I have not read. W & K stands well on its own, although I believe it would have been more enjoyable in sequence. It tells the story of Ambrose, a boy destined to defeat the Prince Under the Sky, who he calls the Heron Man. The story slowed here and there and at times I found some characters unlikable to the point that I was on the verge of not caring for them. But the writing sustained me through these rough spots. The time and place is well-drawn and the fantasy elements, though sparingly used, add a rich flavor. By the end, I was very glad to have joined Ambrose on his journey.
