Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In case fans of alt-country turned art-rock band Wilco didn't get enough pertinent reading material this year—including front man Jeff Tweedy's poetry collection, Adult Head, and rock critic Greg Kot's affectionate band bio, Wilco: Learning How to Die—there's this lavishly designed and gorgeously printed collaboration between band members and the New York design company PictureBox. Meant to capture the soulful, rockin', poetically inscrutable essence of Wilco's art, it collects essays, drawings and random comments by Wilco members, organized by their collective interests, including "The Loft" where they rehearse, "The Instruments" they use and the process of "Making a Record." Accompanied by a CD of unreleased material and generously illustrated with beautiful color photographs by Michael Schmelling, it also features Henry Miller's classic essay on creativity, "The Angel Is My Watermark"; an often tortured look at five Wilco songs by Rick Moody; and a section on how the band's soundman prepares for a live concert that gives a fascinating look at the workday of professional musicians. While the book's beauty can't mask its lack of context—biographical or musical—for anyone with a casual interest in the band, there are plenty of hardcore fans out there who'll find it required reading.

This review is from: The Wilco Book (Hardcover)
I am a huge fan of Wilco, (owning all their recorded work and dvd) but this book is a joke being played on all their fans. Many of the pictures have nothing to do with Wilco, the artwork is also unrelated and not even done by a member of the band. There is very little substance to the writing and the cd of extra unreleased tracks are largely just soundscapes, with no structure to speak of. I'm sorry, but this book is a rip off!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful hints..., Jun 11 2006
This review is from: The Wilco Book (Hardcover)
This is an amazing book!!! The Wilco book is a learning experience in the same way that "The Advancing Guitarist" by Mik Goodrik is a learning experience, you have to find your own way through it. There has never been a simple answer to what Wilco does and this book definitley follows suit and if you want a good coffee table book this may not be it (or maybe it is the new standard?). The Wilco book almost reads like some mid nintey-eighties high school text book with many disjointed items that upon closer inspection really have intellectual connective tissue, the dots have to be joined by effort from the reader though. The art by Bern Porter, included in the 'interlude' of the book, is the art of a physicist, it has logical themes that spiral with a strange emotional centre that creates a connective tissue. The front and back of the books are littered with Jeff Tweedy's hand written numbers - how does the art of a disenchanted physicist corealate to the numbers of Jeff Tweedy's anxiety? The CD that also comes with the book is an incredible dive into the more improvisational aspects of the band, with helpful hints about set improve scattered all along the book. One shining moment of the CD is "Hummingbird", this version prooves to be an insider look into the 'deconstruction' we have all heard so much about. The essay written by Rick Moody has an interesting way of approaching the lyircal content of Wilco as well as breaking down the albums into their critical moments (ie: Dash 7 = A.M, or Sunken Treasure = Being There)

This book is a learning experience and it takes a few read throughs to 'get it', whatever 'it' may be. This is not a book to be easily dismissed for it has some essential themes to understanding Wilco in it. This is a quote of a quote from "The Angel is my Watermark" by Henry Miller (which is the other half of the 'interlude'):

"The question which emerges with every work of art that is turned out is:"Is there more to what we see than meets the eye?" And the answer is always yes. In the humblest object we can find what we seek - beauty, truth, reality, divinty."

I thought the book was ok, I liked the cover the best to be honest. Kind of weird but the book didn't have much substance to me. Rock on Wilco, your still great.
