"Beautifully read" The Oldie

Book Description

This is a compelling story of families and lives assembled from the broken remains of what has been lost. Ralph, Marnie and Oliver once knew each other as childhood friends. Now they meet again in Ralph's secluded cottage to share the precious days that Ralph has left. As they share memories, Marnie is taken back to a summer when everything changed between them. Can they put the devastating events of twenty years ago to rest and rekindle the intimacy they once shared? This recording is unabridged. Typically abridged audiobooks are not more than 60 per cent of the author's work and as low as 30 per cent with characters and plot lines removed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality fiction, Mar 2 2012

I have to admit I'm biased - I love everything written by Nicci Gerrard and most of the books written with her husband as Nicci French. This story of the few days spent with a dying friend from the past is beautifully written and the characters are real and imperfect. The story shifts between present and past, telling the story of how the three come to be together at the present time and of the years in between. This is not a sensational book (in a very good way) and the ending is gentle and not too neat. Don't read if you're feeling a bit down but highly recommended quality fiction.
