'Wise words are rarer than precious stones'. Egyptologist, essayist and novelist, Christian Jacq is one of the most widely read authors in the world. Here, he presents a new vision of one of the pillars of Egyptian wisdom and the key to an era of rich spirituality which has much to offer us. Ptah-Hotep was a philosopher and leading statesman in the Egypt of 2400 BC. Having reached the great age of 110, he decided to pass on the benefit of his experience by setting down a collection of sayings, or 'wisdoms'. Miraculously preserved, his work has a real claim to be the oldest book in the world and offers not only wisdom but also an exceptional insight into the life and philosophy of the ancient world. As second in command to the fifth-dynasty pharaoh Djedkare Isesi, Ptah-Hotep's work is crucial to our understanding of the golden age of the Ancient Empire (around 2640-2040 BC). Through this book, we can see into the mind of the sage and share his most intimate reflections. Styled as advice from father to son or master to pupil, his words offer counsel on timeless topics such as the art of governing, the nature of true knowledge and how to enjoy a harmonious life without violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE OLDEST BOOK IN THE WORLD Aug 24 2012

When reading about ancient Egyptians and their mysteries from professional sources such as Christian Jacq one of the most widely read authors in the world, and Enel -certainly less known- one of the things that suprise the most is that, definitively, they both agree -based in their studies and a whole life quest- that the Egyptian civilization was inspired and guided by great sages such as Pta-Hopet and Im-Hotep. About the latter The Urantia Book says he was an andite, that is to say, his origin came from the adanites,i.e., from Adam and Eve(both extraterrestrials), and so from a stream of knowlegde and life, quite advance from the spiritual point of view.

After reading this beautiful book by Christian Jacq we can conclude that while Im-Hotep initiated the age of pyramides, or else, the without of things, as another Frenchman, Teilhard de Chardin, would put it, Ptah-Hotep initiated the within of things, or else, the spiritual framework behind those great structures mankind does not know anything about how they were built.

It was precisely, The Wisdom of Ptah-Hotep, the one, that made possible that great civilization that lasted for 3000 years, an achievement unique in the history of mankind, and whose legacy was assumed by the hebrews and the greeks as well, and as so, being the real cradle of our civilization.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this book! Jan 17 2012

If you're ready to break outside your normal parameters, buy this book. The Maxims are quite short, simple and to the point, but also deep and timeless. If you have an open and contemplative heart, and are ready to change your perspective on life, read on. "A big heart, in a man or woman, is a gift". Well said....
