Though it may be thought of as sacrilegious to remake a classic such as The Wizard of Oz, this 1978 film directed by Sidney Lumet (The Pawnbroker, Serpico) is a vibrant and entertaining retelling of the modern fable, featuring an all black cast in the familiar story of a rural small-town girl whose dreams transport her to a magical world where the battle between good and evil gives the real world a sense of perspective. Rendered in the style of a musical (based on a successful Broadway run), the film benefits from using new contemporary music from stars Diana Ross (Mahogany, Lady Sings the Blues) as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the shy Scarecrow, with music arranged by Quincy Jones. This visually and musically exciting film is less a remake than a reinvention that stands and dances very well on its own. --Robert Lane

3.0 out of 5 stars MJ was an awesome Scarecrow!! Sep 27 2009

MJ really stood out in this film. His performance was really good. His moves were incredible and he was so young and sweet. Overall, the film did not work for me but it was worth watching MJ. If you're a true Michael fan, you gotta see this 'cuz it was a pivotal time in his life and career and you can see how happy he was and how he gave his all to his role as the Scarecrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars An American Classic Dec 1 2011
By Dax
This film is glamorous and addictive, much like the decade in which it was created. Amazing music and visuals. Dianna Ross is great, but the real stars are the "supporting actors" who bring the story to life! A young Michael Jackson is endearing and lovable as the timid scarecrow, Nipsey Russel shines as the humorous and love struck Tin Man and Ted Ross lends a strong voice to the Lion. Richard Pryor as the Wiz is also the most sincere representation of a lost and lonely man who was tragically swept away from his home and abused his new found power. My favorite scene would be the "Poppies" where all the glam and sex of the 70s is on display. Its a great movie, you need to watch it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael at his finest!!! Jan 7 2010
There is so much to love with this movie. Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the list goes on and on. If you miss this movie, it is your loss. A true classic in African American cinema. It's hard to believe they crammed so much talent into one film! A worthy watch for sure!!!!!
