This review is from: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Hardcover)
I am always impressed with Robert Ingpen's marvelous work and this last summer I was thinking he should illustrate OZ and he did. He shows his marvelous work especially in his illustration showing the Tin Woodman as he progressed from the Flesh "Nick Chopper" to the fully Tin man, it is fascinating and children who hear the story about the woodman will find it fascinating as well as sad. Ingpen's scarecrow reminds one of a clown who has problems putting his arms down to his side and his Cowardly Lion is very much a real lion but Ingpen did forget the Cowardly Lion is supposed to be the size of a small horse so Dorothy can ride him but his realism makes up for the loss. There is little in the illustrations to remind one of the 1939 movie. Ingpen sticks to the text and also works with the Denslow pictures in mind. This book has enough pictures to keep children interested and even younger children will want the story read to them. I challenge parents to read the story to their kids and if possible read it before showing them the movie. They may come away saying that the book is better than the movie but isn't it always the case, the book is always better than the movie. Many assume the original story is scarier than the film I propose it is just the opposite for the wicked witch of the west, in the book, does not appear until chapter 12 and later the winged monkeys prove valuable allies to Dorothy and her friends. Ingpen even chose to not illustrate the kalidahs and the giant spider for the book which is a pity for it would be interesting to see how he portrays these characters but because of this the book lacks the ferocious characters (Fans of OZ and Denslow take note, Denslow does not illustrate the giant spider either). Ingpen also favors us with a marvelous painting of L. Frank Baum which makes an extra charming feature. All I want to ask of Ingpen is what is next?
