Review

Dan Allender has unraveled the very heart of sexual abuse, both in diagnosis and scriptural resolution. This is the first book on sexual abuse that gives the victim God's path to healing: a costly path of fresh suffering that leads to a life characterized by love. -- Dr. Pamela Reeve, Multnomah School of the Bible

Dr. Allender acts as a true surgeon of the soul in making a diagnosis which, while compassionate, is never sentimental. He brings the wounded survivor of abuse to the Great Physician for healing. I welcome this book: a next step for those who have begun the healing process, and a place to start for others. -- Maxine Hancock, author of Child Sexual Abuse

These powerful pages bring the realities of damaging human experience into the perspective of a loving God. With professional skill and spiritual insight from the crucible of experience, Dr. Allender blends a keen understanding of the dynamics of sexual abuse with the practical application of Christian truth. An excellent and timely book! -- John Powell, Ph.D., professor, Counseling Center, Michigan State University

5.0 out of 5 stars Godly, sound advice April 23 2003

I must admit I was surprised when I read this book as I had already read 11 other books written on this subject matter. I didn't think I would get anything "new" out of this book but I was blown away by the revelations I received while reading it! I suddenly realized this book described exactly how I was feeling and the conflicts that were raging within my soul about what had happened to me as a child. Excellent book, I would recommend it for child abuse victim's no matter how many years have gone by. It explained things in such a way that I finally knew why I acted and responded to people in the ways that I do today, 36 years after my abuse occurred. I hid behind a self preservation mask because the truth of what happened to me when I was a child (now many years ago)was always carried around with me like unwelcome garbage. That memory "garbage" should have been thrown out for the garbage pickup years ago but I had kept it hidden inside me, concealed from everyone else's view. However, of course these hidden memories still smelled to high heavens hidden inside my soul behind a public mask that really only was fooling myself and no one else after all. Although my family and friends had no idea what the deep problem was in my life, I am positive they all still could tell that I was hiding something too painful to share from them behind my "mask"!

1.0 out of 5 stars The BIBLE for the abused Jan. 1 2003
Format:Paperback
The book I read when I decided to break the silence of Childhood sexual abuse within the Plymouth brethren church, as I read it there were times I didn't want to believe what I was reading, but as i started to tell my story of abuse the boof became so real as to my own experiences. The book I read again tghis time it had a new meaning to me, after I tried unsuccessflly in tring to have the Church eldres speak with my self I found strength and support that no other person/s would give but the book "THE WOUNDED HEART" gave me, the book some what became my support, my mentor when all other help had failed I relied on the book.
I was succesfull in having my abuser [church elder] jailed for 7 years, I read the book again this time I felt that with the help of the book I had won, together we had conquered the church and the legal system and won. The book has been a wonderful help both to the abused and to the person/s that what to know more as to how to assit those who have been abused, I have given so many of the "THE WOUNDED HEART" to person/s like myself. the Best I have read, and I have read many.[would love to hear from other that have read the book]

5.0 out of 5 stars The painful truth & the healing truth! Aug. 27 2001

Format:Paperback
For way to long the Church has swept this issue under the rug and not been willing to face the truth of the damage of sexual abuse and the ugly potential that lies in all of us,save our hearts being changes by God. This book is for anyone who has the courage to face the ugly truth of our whickedness and at the same time is willing to press on to see that Jesus really did come to heal the broken hearted. And He can! Yes that healing can be tremendiously hard but it is worth it. Unfortunatly before I read this book, I did not really know how to save my marriage to a woman who had been sexually abused for years and the effects really came out after we got married. I wish I had read it before she made up her mind she was not coming back. If emotional intimacy is pretty much non-exsistant in your relationship with your spouse and your running out of hope that it can be saved, READ THIS BOOK! I am training to go into full time Uth ministry and I highly recommend that every Pastor serious about wanting to understand the healing process for abuse victiums, read this book. It will challenge you and make you cry out for more wisdom and the amazing grace of God we all need. We were created to be intimate with God, and so many have been robbed of that due to the shame and effects of abuse! And the Church at large dosen't want to deal with it! DR allender with great care, wisdom, and truth, points a person to wholeness that can only be found in intimate relationship with God and the power He provides to live out love, in our sinful unfair world!
