Review

"The Yugoslav Drama is a first-class examination of the tragedy that has overtaken that benighted country. Hopefully it will help us all learn from this disaster how to prevent similar occurrences in the future." Lawrence S. Eagleburger, former United States Secretary of State. "One of the best of the many recent books on the subject ... Crnobrnja's account of Yugoslavia's collapse and the forces that led to it is lucid, thoughtful, well-written and comprehensive ... This book offers great insight into the tortured demise of a once-stable federation." John M. Fraser, Ottawa Citizen. "Crnobrnja has provided a highly readable and historically informed account of the disintegration of the south Slav federation. His narrative underscores what many Western journalists and politicians have normally ignored: that the failure of Yugoslavia was the failure of politics, not the triumph of 'ancient hatreds' or 'Balkan mentalities.'" Charles King, International Journal.

Product Description

Crnobrnja discusses in detail the part of the drama most visible to the world -- the rapid dissolution of the country following civil war and internationalization. He emphasizes the dichotomy between the lack of compromise on the part of the Yugoslav participants and the natural tendency to compromise that characterizes both the European Communities and the processes and actions of the United Nations. In a synthesis of the immediate situation, he draws together the threads of the story to consider and analyse possible future scenarios and to place them in a broader Balkan and European context. The updated second edition provides an evaluation of events in the ongoing struggle over the last two years and the prospects for peace in the near future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying Informative Recollection, Nov 1 2011

This review is from: The Yugoslav Drama (Paperback)
The Yugslav Drama is a highly informative, yet entirely comprehendible, explanation of the civil conflict that occurred in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. Crnobrnja explains what led to the civil conflict, what exactly happened, and how the region is moving forward. His perspective on the war is important to take into consideration because of his employment as the Yugoslav ambassador. By not just recounting, but providing the why and how, the reader can get a full picture of the disastrous situation. When I began reading this book I had a very limited knowledge base of what Yugoslavia was and what had been happening there. Crnobrnja provided all the information necessary to obtain a grasp on the information from beginning to the almost preset time. Although the conflict has not entirely ceased, he lists several options that the region possesses to retain peace. What I found especially interesting was the explanation on how the international community responded to the conflict. For example, there was much talk of intervention to stop the bloody war, but relatively no actual intervention. I was highly impressed by how such an informative and factual book could be so easy to focus on and stay interested in. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the conflicts in Eastern Europe or in ethnic, civil conflicts in general (such as Rwanda and others in Africa).

This review is from: The Yugoslav Drama (Paperback)
The Yugoslav Drama is full of information on the issues of differing ethnicities in Yugoslavia and the conflicts it creates, its government, and reasons for the Yugoslavia Wars. I can honestly say that I had no prior knowledge about the Yugoslavia Wars or even on the history of Yugoslavia, but from reading this book I am now well informed on these issues. I found it very interesting about the number of nations within Yugoslavia and also about Tito being able to bring these nations together for a common cause. This book answers the questions of what caused the conflict and downfall of Yugoslavia. Also Crnobrnja talks about possible actions to be made to help Yugoslavia turnaround and the possibility of regaining peace in the country. The book also provides Crnobrnja writes this book in sequential order making it easier to understand what events lead to what. However, there is so much information in this book that at times it is overwhelming and difficult to take in everything you read. I appreciated how Crnobrnja gives a very detailed description of the events in and information on Yugoslavia. I wouldn't recommend this book as a light, fun read but for learning or research purposes I would highly recommend it. I wouldn't say I enjoyed reading this book, but it wasn't torture either. I gained a lot of knowledge from reading this book so I don't feel like it was a waist of time to read.
