From Library Journal
Here Pallister (Aime Cesaire, Twayne, 1992) analyzes individual films produced before 1991 in varying detail, grouping the films in five subject categories: those that search for roots in Quebec's past, films by women directors, Quebecois literary adaptations, films that examine contemporary Quebec society and institutions, and movies by anglophone Quebecois. Pallister discusses both feature films and documentaries and shows an immense enthusiasm for the high quality of Quebec's film output. Occasionally the book reads like a college text, with continual references to a suggested reading list. And translations of quotes or expressions in French are not uniform: for every three translated into English, one is not. Still, this is the first large-scale examination in English of the predominantly French-language films of Quebec, and, as such, it may fill a gap.
