After 8 years Holly Dillon comes face to face with her ex-husband, Jim. Brought together unexpectally by their son Ian, who wants to know his father, Holly struggles to figure out if there is a future. Alcohol had onced ruled Jim's life but he claim's that he has been sober for 6 years. Can Holly believe it? I found this book well written. Both Jim and Holly have to face many ghosts of their past. With the guidance of the Lord they slowly work their way back. Like real life there are pitfalls along the way. The author shows that love in one another and in God can guide one through the toughtest times.

this was my first time reading something by kate welsh, and now i absolutely adore her stories!!! i got so mad @ holly some times and i myself fell in love w/ jim. i thought the plot was original and not one of those typical ones you get used to over time. this story made me cry and i was a bit annoyed w/ one part of the story, only because i sided w/ jim, but it really shows how we should follow what we preach/say and have a bit more faith.

What a Surprise!, Feb 2 2012

This story was so excellent!!! I loved those kids - they were so adorable!
When I read "Small-Town Dreams" a couple weeks ago, I thought the name Jim Dillon sounded familiar, but I read the reviews from her earlier books and never found his name, so I figured it was just one of those common names. Then I realized where I had heard it - he was the preacher from "A Family For Christmas!" I loved that book so much and wondered if Trent and Maggie ever got the child of their own they always longed for!
The author did such a GREAT job! I never realized that these books were connected, and maybe the author hadn't really intended on connecting them again, but she did! And what a wonderful job she did! Jim told Holly the story of his conversion, which was led by the main character from "Never Lie to an Angel." Though their names are just mentioned, we do learn something about their lives together as man and wife. Then we learn that the man from small town dreams (Joshua) was an old friend of Jim's and Holly's from before they divorced.
But the most pleasant surprise was getting to read a lot more about the wonderful couple who inherited their four nieces and nephews - Trent and Maggie. Not only that, but we got to see the mischievous children befriend Ian and drag him into their crazy schemes. They all get into trouble together - it's all so very, very cute!!! I just absolutely LOVED this book!
I must admit, though, that Holly angered me when she jumped to conclusions about Jim, but I can sorta understand where she is coming from...
Like I said, this was a great story! I loved revisiting all the characters, and meeting Holly and Ian! Many kudos to this author! I cannot wait to read her next book!!!
