Product Description

A lucid, elegant, and complete survey of set theory, this volume is drawn from the authors' substantial teaching experience. The first of three parts focuses on axiomatic set theory. The second part explores the consistency of the continuum hypothesis, and the final section examines forcing and independence results. 1996 edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book on set theory, April 13 2002
I would imagine that introductory set theory books pose a significant problem for writers. Unless the reader has read a fair amount of mathematics, the material will seem unmotivated. On the other hand, if the reader has been exposed to mathematics, then she will find the introductory portion of the book boring and tedious. Smullyan & Fitting claimed to write an introductory book, but I don't think they did.

The introduction to sets is very fast. This is fine, as I fall into the class of people who find the introductions tedious. This is just a warning to anyone looking for a very introductory book: there are cheaper ones which you will understand better than this (Kamke, for example).

However, if you have had a fair amount of experience with logic and some set theory, then this book is great. The author's method of double induction brings together a large number of topics. Cohen's forcing method is presented with crystal clarity, and in a significantly interesting way. Independence proofs are, by their nature, generally tedious and pedantic. Yet the authors managed to make those presented very interesting.

Each chapter starts out with an interesting summary of the main ideas to be covered. This gives the reader a sort of "road map" in each chapter, allowing her to see where the chapter is headed, and how it is going to get there. This sort of thing is very important, but often lacking in mathematical books.

I highly recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing symbols, Jan 15 2011
By Melvin Fitting - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Set Theory and the Continuum Problem (Paperback)
Some reviewers reported missing symbols. As one of the authors of the book, I was seriously concerned. (Disclaimer: we receive no royalties on this edition.) On checking with the publisher, Dover, I found that the second (not the first) printing was defective and was recalled, though some copies got out anyway. I understand the problem has now been corrected. This does not mean there are no errors in the book, but now they should be entirely those of the authors.

1.0 out of 5 stars The symbols ARE missing, Sep 27 2010

Perhaps there were different printing runs, but as the first reviewer experienced, my copy lacked the symbols for membership, subset, quantifiers, etc. It really does make the book useless. I too would like to have a correctly printed copy.
Update. I returned the book, explaining that the symbols were missing and got a replacement yesterday, Sept. 29. Unfortunately the replacement also lacks the symbols. The reviewer who had symbols is in Europe. Perhaps the US printing is messed up. I am going to go to a book store where I can look at the pages before I buy the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars From set theory... To the continuum problem, May 2 2011
By Gargoura "Gargoura" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Set Theory and the Continuum Problem (Paperback)
Smullyan's book is simply thrilling and at a very reasonable price !

It actually takes you to Paul Cohen's inspired findings without having to dive into Cohen's unreadable treatment and drown (if you're not a seasoned professional)

Forget about Potter's overpriced indigestion and Suppes's monotonous books (see my reviews on those)

Buy this book and enjoy it.
