5.0 out of 5 stars Chilliwack Passes Trial By Fire! Feb 14 2004
By CS Man
Format:Audio CD
20 years since their last studio album, Chilliwack is back with a live album which captures the essence of the old standards while infusing them with a raw energy missing from many other bands' "reunion" albums. Most of the big hits are there: Fly at Night, Lonesome Mary, I Believe, Crazy Talk, Communication Breakdown, Watcha Gonna Do, Arms of Mary, Baby Blue, California Girl, Rain-O and My Girl, all of which appear on the Greatest Hits CD. Also included are lesser known hits and album tracks such as Trial By Fire, Groundhog, Something I Like About That and 17th Summer. Recorded over a 3 year period at various venues, the sound is consistent throughout and the production is top-notch. The absence of keyboards does not detract from the songs, with Bill Henderson covering keyboard solos with an amazing array of guitar sounds. Packaging, liner notes and extras are fabulous. And although he's well into middle age, Henderson's voice is still remarkable. Vocal assists go to Henderson's daughters Camille and Saffron. A worthy addition to your collection, especially for the numbers which do not appear on CD elsewhere. At 78 minutes, it's full value. Cheap at twice the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding live album Nov 1 2009
Format:Audio CD
I don't normally like live recordings, but this is an excellent album that fills some holes in the Chilliwack collection. Like the previous reviewer mentioned, There & Back sounds great and Bill Henderson is in fine singing form. [To my admittedly damaged ears, the soaring vocals for "My Girl" are even better than the original.] The liner notes are worth the price of the album alone; each song includes an extended discussion and analysis from Bill.

The album covers many tunes that aren't in the disappointing Greatest Hits album. I was particularly happy to hear two songs from my favourite album, Breakdown in Paradise, an album that might never be released: "Trial by Fire" is a scorching hard rock classic, and the introduction to "Communication Breakdown" is back after being left out in the butchered Greatest Hits version. Indeed, if There & Back had "Road to Paradise", "Lookin' For a Place" and "Who's Winnin'", it would be the perfect greatest hits legacy for the band.

In any case, if you like Chilliwack or classic rock in general, this is a sure bet.
