"Splendid."

"As a longtime fan of M. C. Beaton --- and Agatha Raisin in particular --- I have to say that THERE GOES THE BRIDE really is one of the most fun novels in the series. As always, there are the expected twists, turns and close calls as Agatha plunges ever forward to solve the crime. In addition, Beaton includes priceless moments regarding Agatha’s personal life --- laugh-out-loud
moments that only a character like Agatha can engender. Pick this one up now! You won’t be disappointed."

Book Description

James Lacey wandered over to the window of his hotel room. His fiancée, Felicity, was asleep. He was feeling some twinges of unease. What he loved about Felicity was the way she looked at him with her large eyes, appearing to drink in every word.

But on the plane journey, he wondered if she were listening to him. “The order to charge was given,” said James, “and a spaceship landed in the valley and some little green men got out.” “Fascinating,” breathed Felicity. “You weren’t listening!” “Just tired, darling. What were you saying?”

James heard a commotion down below the hotel. He opened the window and leaned out. A woman had tripped and fallen getting into a cab. He only got a glimpse but he was suddenly sure the woman was Agatha. A familiar voice rose on the Crimean air, “Snakes and bastards!”

Bossy, impulsive, yet hopelessly romantic, Agatha is dreading the upcoming marriage of her ex-husband, James Lacey. Although she has set her sights on a handsome and beguiling new Frenchman, she can’t quite stop obsessing about James.

Her best intentions to move on with her life are put on hold when James’s young bride is shot to death just minutes before saying “I do,” and Agatha is named the prime suspect. Agatha’s sleuthing sidekick Toni stands ready to help find the real killer, but the case proves trickier than ever.

Will her name be cleared, or has the outrageous Agatha finally had her last romp?

4.0 out of 5 stars Agatha Pines, Fusses, Detects, Dodges, Sulks, and Tries New Romance, Nov 21 2009

(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (#1 HALL OF FAME)
This review is from: There Goes the Bride: An Agatha Raisin Mystery (Hardcover)
"Yet man is born to trouble,
As the sparks fly upward."

--Job 5:7

There Goes the Bride nicely summarizes the frustrations of being an unattached fifty-year-old who craves romance and is beginning to doubt herself. Most novels write about such characters through lots of psychological Sturm und Drang. M.C. Beaton takes a better route by putting lots of action together so we can deduce Agatha Raisin's inner turmoil through her whirling dervish imitations. In fact, I don't recall another mystery in the series that has as much action as this one . . . a rarity in a cozy.

Although Agatha knows that James Lacey isn't right for her (after all, he divorced her by pretending he wanted to become a monk), she's galled by James being engaged to the beautiful, young, and adoring Felicity Bross-Tilkington. James has told Agatha that he appreciates Felicity's interest in his military history writing. Agatha has always been bored stiff by the same. Ever curious (and you know what happened to the curious cat), she takes two trips to look into military history with some humorous consequences. Along the way, she hopes to snag someone of interest, but doesn't get anywhere.

Back in England, the wedding of her ex looms. Agatha is very uncomfortable, and James doesn't make matters any better by confiding that he's tiring of Felicity . . . who only seems to be pretending to be interested in him. As the festivities near, something's definitely off. Before Agatha can figure out what's going on, there's a corpse and Agatha is suspect numero uno. Now, she has to get to the bottom of things.

Romance isn't Agatha's only problem. The detective agency doesn't really thrill her anymore, even after Toni Gilmour returns to the firm . . . making detecting easier . . . if less satisfying. Agatha alternates between being jealous of Felicity and Toni.

As the detection swings into high gear, Agatha finds herself playing a more deadly game than she's anticipated. Let an attractive man drop by, and she flies like a moth towards the flame. Could that tendency be fatal to our Agatha?

Those who love to see Agatha squirm will have plenty to please them with this book. Readers who instead would like Agatha to gain some peace will be deeply disturbed as she dangles, almost defenselessly, in the winds of rancor.

The book's main weakness is that Agatha's angst seems overdone. She is too capable at her core to behave in such a silly fashion all the time. As a result, that aspect of the story won't ring true. She also inspires a nemesis who also seems exaggerated in his desire to do her in. If you can enjoy both aspects as being satirical, it's definitely an above-average character study filled with action and humor.

Keep laughing, especially at your own foibles! It makes life more fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to par, Oct 26 2009

I am such a fan of the Agatha Raisin series but was a bit disappointed with this latest offering. It felt rather disjointed to me in several places. It lacked the flow the novels usually have that let me "enter" the world of Agatha. It felt more like a series of happenings, rather than something plot driven with flow. The end of the novel(the last few chapters) especially felt this way. Don't get me wrong- I love the series and will pre-order the next book when it is released. However, this book just didn't cut it for me. I don't want to say more for fear of giving away spoilers for those who have not read.

4.0 out of 5 stars There Goes the Bride, Oct 5 2009
By Patricia Ibbotson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: There Goes the Bride: An Agatha Raisin Mystery (Hardcover)
This is the 20th in the Agatha Raisin series and I've read them all. In fact, I wait every year for the latest book. Agatha started off as an amateur sleuth and now owns her own detective agency. She is battling aging, a bad hip, and is starting to feel frail. Even worse she is beginning to think she is losing her ability as a detective. She is also a romantic who is waiting for the right man to come along. Her ex-husband, James, who divorced her because he wanted to become a monk, is now engaged to a a beautiful, young woman and has invited Agatha to the wedding. When the bride is murdered minutes before the wedding, Agatha becomes the prime suspect. These books are an updated version of the British cozy and are very entertaining.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ready for editing, May 31 2010
By tmvjr "krazykoyot" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: There Goes the Bride: An Agatha Raisin Mystery (Hardcover)
My impression is that the publishers rushed to publish an outline of a story and not an edited final draft. Almost every paragraph either had separation stars or a few blank lines between them, signifying that the author's outline was used rather than a final draft. The dialog is in outline form, the plot is not smooth, the transitions between paragraphs are not present, and there are even bullet-points still present that she obviously intended to edit at some future time. I don't know if the author has gotten too old to really craft a fine novel anymore, but nothing can kill a series faster than a shoddy version like this that will disappoint die-hard fans. (See Lilian Jackson Braun's last "The Cat Who..." book for a similar ignominious finale). Age itself does not seem the issue -- indeed, P. D. James latest was again brilliant-- but for fans of M.C. Beaton, this novel was so dramatically weaker than all previous entries, there is a serious question as to whether the author herself was actually involved in the publication decision. But publishers need to remember that if we are burned by one purchase, we will not be very likely to run out and purchase any subsequent books in ANY of her series. Personally, I'm going to wait for a library copy of the next book, just to be sure.
