Unusual concept but entertaining new album,
By
This review is from: These Are The Days (Audio CD)
Having not bought a Gino Vannelli album since the eighties (sorry Gino), I was a little unsure about his new cd, 7 new songs combined with 7 old; however I think he's pulled it off pretty well. The new songs are radio-ready adult pop, with jazz, eastern and gospel touches, and it's a good mix of uptempo songs and ballads; "It's Only Love" is definitely the toe-tapper of the album, while "The Great Divide", complete with choir is the heartfelt show-stopper. As for the hits (sequenced in reverse chronological order, which really makes you feel old by the last song), 7 songs can't cover his career properly, but the ones that are included are probably his most popular radio hits. Maybe a double-disc set would have been better, with one disc a complete new album and the other all his hits; but then again maybe the idea was to entice those of us that pretty much lost track of him after 1988 (sorry again Gino), and besides, what's here makes for a pretty decent album.

These Are The Days--of great Gino Vannelli!,

Wow, the long awaited pop CD finally came! The "new" is just as good as the "old." Since I first heard Gino 30 years ago, I've always been so incredibly moved by the words to his songs, and these new songs are no exception. He's come back to great pop songs but the deep emotions and words are still there...American pop music today just doesn't hold a candle to Gino's music and never will. It's embarrasing, really. "Venus Envy" tackles the subject of plastic surgery, and it's about time someone put it in it's proper place--out the door! "It's Only Love" is a great swinging tune that gets you jamming! My personal favorite is "Rock me to Heaven" because the words are so real--such a nice love song. Buy this CD and you will not be disappointed--it's one of Gino's best. I can't wait for the next one! Gino's like fine wine--he just gets better with age.

FANTASTIC RETURN,

I had to chime in here - after being a long time Gino fan, I had nearly "given up" on the idea of hearing any new music - pop music - from him anytime soon. I am soooo freakin' pleased to say that the wait is over. This is FANTASTIC Gino - and that voice just doesnt change. The small nuances of Gino's incredible voice are still there, and as a singer myself, I am continuing to be amazed at his phrasing and range. His writing has just gotten better & better & now it seems that the mature Gino has truly reaffirmed his place in pop music with the fantastic new songs on this CD. I can't wait for the next one! Standout cuts: "It's Only Love", "Eastwest World", "Venus Envy".... but there's not a clinker or hint of filler in any of the new tunes. Highly recommended if you love Gino's voice.
