Essential Reading for New Missionaries, Sep 1 2008
This book has been one of the most special books in my life, a personal treasure that I share with those who can hear its message. Like Elizabeth Elliot, I went out as a new young single missionary in 1975, with vision and deep commitment. The experience and challenges overwhelmed me, due to my being unprepared for the realities of missionary life. I discovered mission conferences and fund-raising missionaries on furlough do not prepare newcomers for the realities of the mission field.
No one at my home-church could understand the struggles I was going through overseas, and I had little spiritual support where I was working. But God's divine intervention brought this little book "These Strange Ashes" into my hands in 1978, as a newly published book in British Christian bookstores. In reading this book, I finally found someone who understood and had been where I was as a new missionary, someone who could comfort and guide me in my spiritual struggles. This book was a Godsend in my life's journey.
When I asked for people in my home-church in the United States to get the book, they could not get it. I found out later from Elizabeth Elliott (personally) that, to her great disappointment, US publishers would not publish this book, as the message was not "popular" (ie. it talks about grief and loss and the sense of futility on the mission field) and therefore would not sell. Elizabeth reminded me that Christian publishers are not non-profit organizations, but profit-making businesses, which is a frustration for her also, as they (not she) decide what gets published, and money is their bottomline.
However, British Christian publishers (and therefore under British copyright and distribution) did publish her book in the mid-1970's as they felt "it's message was of great importance" even if it was not popular. It was this first book/edition that I read overseas in 1978. Much later, US publishers did finally publish "These Strange Ashes", but not until many years later, which is the book/edition/copyright that Amazon is selling.
I highly recommend this book for those who want to understand the grief and loss of a "vision/calling", the often troubling sense of futility in mission work, and the personal struggles to make a commitment on a deeper level; as well as for those who are embarking on their first missionary trip. The book is starkly realistic of missionary life, but it is also empowering by digging deeply into one's own faith. It reminds me of those words of Jesus: "In this world you will have trials and tribulations; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." Thank you, Elizabeth, for your courage and faithfulness in writing this deeply personal testimony/memoire about your first missionary trip as a young single adult.

A timeless reminder that God works through people, His way., Sep 4 1998

This review is from: These Strange Ashes: Is God Still in Charge? (Paperback)
Out of print for many years, "These Strange Ashes" now returns as a classic of Christian missions. Written by an author better known for books about her husband Jim Elliot's well-publicized martyrdom in the 1950's, this book reviews Elisabeth's earlier mission work as a single woman deep in the South American jungle. Far from a rosy or simple story, Elliot honestly shares her struggles, frustrations and confusion when God acted contrary to the way she thought He ought. This is a "must read" for anyone who deeply cares about Christian missions.
