Book Description

Aug 12 2008
Thing-Thing was neither a Teddy bear nor a rabbit; not a stuffed dog or cat. It was something like each of those, and nothing at all you could name. But it had something special. It had the hope that one day it would find a child to love it and talk to it and make it tea parties and take it to bed. A child it could love back.

Certainly Archibald Crimp was not that child. He had just thrown Thing-Thing out the open sixth-floor window of the Excelsior Hotel.

Oh, dear, thought Thing-Thing to itself. This is bad, this is very bad.

Cary Fagan and Nicolas Debon have created a story so rich in words and images that, despite taking place in a matter of seconds, Thing-Thing will be remembered as vividly as a child’s favorite toy.

Review

“Fagan’s story, and its serendipitous end, will please those on laps or large groups: Debon’s vertiginous cityscapes, with wildly varying perspectives and orientations supported by a leaping, swirling typeface, are just as good a match to the text as Thing-Thing and its new owner.”
— Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews

“…a beautifully rendered and wickedly imaginative tale of an unwanted toy, is the best of a strong bunch. Never has falling out of a building been made to seem so heartbreaking – and yet so fun to read about.”
— Books of the Year, Quill & Quire

“The toy named Thing-Thing – is the hilarious heart of this delectable picture book.”
— Top 10 for 2008, The Globe and Mail

Cary Fagan has written a number of well-liked books for children including My New Shirt, Ten Old Men and a Mouse, and The Market Wedding. Add Thing-Thing to his list that every youngster will not only enjoy but also learn a valuable lesson.

Thing-Thing is an amusing yet touching story of a rather unusual stuffed animal. You see, Thing-Thing is one of a kind. He's "Not quite a bunny rabbit, but not quite a dog either, nor a bear, or a cat for that matter." He's just a lonely fellow who would very much like to have someone take him home and love him.

Unfortunately, the person who buys him is Mr. Crimp, father of one of the most spoiled little boys to appear on a page. When the boy sees Thing-Thing, he's so mad at this birthday gift that he tosses him right out a hotel window - and their room is on the 6th floor of the Excelsior Hotel. Well, Thing-Thing had heard there were children like that but he didn't believe it until he found himself hurtling toward the ground.

As he passes each floor young readers learn what is going on inside that particular room from Isabel, a young hockey player with a sore ankle to a very old woman lunching in the hotel's dining room.

When he's out there in space how can Thing-Thing ever find a child who will love him and talk to him, make him tea parties and take him to bed?

Thing-Thing is a wonderful way to be reminded of the need to love and be loved in return.

5.0 out of 5 stars A whimsical children's picturebook Sep 7 2008
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Thing-Thing is a whimsical children's picturebook about a stuffed toy that isn't quite a teddy bear, rabbit, dog, or cat, but rather something a little like each. Thing-Things hopes to find a child who will love it and talk to it, but Archibald Crimp is not that child - he throws poor Thing-Thing out the sixth-floor window of the Excelsior Hotel! Oh, dear! The wacky, colorful illustrations add this perfect touch to a storybook about the bright side that can shine on even the most difficult situations.
