Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-A brief overview of the many disciplines of science. Without the benefit of a table of contents, the countdown begins immediately with chemistry facts. The author then progresses rapidly through the basic areas of physics, the earth-science groups, biology, and on to technology. A "Brief Bio" section highlights famous people in their fields. The index lists subjects with a number listed beside them. Readers won't readily know if the number refers to a page or the topic. Additional fun facts are frequently included in shaded boxes. Small pen-and-ink sketches enhance the presentation. This book will best be used for informative pleasure reading rather than for reports or science-fair projects.

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-7. Beres packs an incredible amount of basic science information into this compact book, which is organized into broad categories, including chemistry, physics, biology, zoology, and geography. Using a reader-friendly text and black-and-white illustrations, she introduces 101 science facts, covering a wide variety of subjects--among them, cells, weather, fungi, deciduous trees, earthquakes, steam engines, and the human body. Brief biographies of relevant scientists and discoverers are also included, as are easy hands-on activities and entertaining facts (Did you know "you have 30 million smell receptors in your nose" ?) At once a source for reference and reports and for browsing and just plain fun, this is a must for science collections. Helen Rosenberg

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book appealling to the inquiring mind of any child., Oct 19 1998

This review is from: 101 Things Every Kid Should Know About Science (Paperback)
This is a good book for 3rd - 7th graders because its "strange but true" tidbit-based approach will appeal to any curious mind. What is particularly nice about the book is that it is NOT a haphazardly arranged collection of factoids, as so many kids science books are. Beres' book may provide information in small chunks, but the chunks build on one another, so after reading a chapter full of them you emerge with an understanding of the overall shape of earth science, for instance, or biology. It certainly isn't a textbook, but it will get readers interested in the way the world works and how scientists go about discovering those workings.
