Book Description

April 28 2009

When Barbara realizes time is running out, she writes letters to her four daughters, aware they’ll have to manage without her. Take Lisa, in her 30s but incapable of making a commitment, or Jennifer, trapped in a stale marriage and buttoned up so tight she could burst. While 20-something Amanda is the traveller, always distanced from the rest of the family. And Hannah, only a teenager, is about to be parted from the mother she adores. But by drawing on the wisdom in Barbara’s letters, the girls might just find a way to cope with their loss.

This is the first book that I read by this author. It was slow but it hook me. Although I don't have sisters, I was in a mood to read about nurturing relationships and, as a result, I enjoyed this book. It may speak to you more if you have a similar history (i.e, loosing a wonderful mother very young when in your mid-twenties). That said, the title is a little deceiving because, it's not so much about the letters from the mother but rather the secrets that she felt compelled to share with her daughters after she died -- a little cowardly and somewhat cruel, if you ask me.... Still, I give it 3 stars (good).

Once I got over the sensitive subject matter that caused tears spring to my eyes on more than one occasion in the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It was sensitive, the characters relatable and the plot rolled along smoothly.

There was enough intrigue surrounding the daughter's lives to keep me interested and I enjoyed the exploration of their relationships especially with their age differences. Even though I only have brothers I found could still relate to their relationships which I have had a hard time with some novels in the past about sisters.

The letters from their mum were so heartfelt and brought tears to my eyes on numerous occasions and I felt the love for her daughters and them for each other over and over again - even their stepfather's character was brimming with it.

I couldn't find much to complain about with this novel. It won't be added to my Top 10, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
