Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

When decorating their homes, many people-whether out of a basic design conservatism or in an attempt to hide red wine stains and muddy footprints-settle on beige, camel and taupe for their couches, rugs and drapes. What they may not realize, says designer Guild, is that using color in home decorating can "infuse the mind to create moods or feelings" and "help you break out of conventions." It's not for nothing that Guild is "renowned for her vital sense of color": the sprightly author founded the influential Designers Guild in London in 1970 and has gone on to receive multiple art and design awards. In this attractive book, she offers ideas both grand and simple for jazzing up a room with unexpected shades. Transform an attic bedroom into an airy space by painting the floorboards pale blue. Mix patterns and colors to give a room a dynamic look. When setting the table for an alfresco lunch, dot each place setting with plump flowers. Guild divides the book into chapters on moods and their corresponding colors (e.g., "joyful/vivacious/mandarin/citrus/cerise" and "pure/serene/mauve/sea green/aqua"). Whether readers desire a relaxed bedroom (try indigo) or a vibrant living room (go for berry), they should find plenty of inspiration in these pages.

From Booklist

Afraid of color? London designer-author Guild (White Hot [1999]), Painted Country [2002], plus eight others) offers up a rainbow of shades that entice even the most hesitant to peek inside. Blatantly commercial because her own company's furniture, wallpaper, fabrics, and paint dominate, Guild nonetheless provides a relaxing way to start dabbling in home color. Shades are paired with emotions: turquoise, lime, and leaf connote freshness and stimulation; mauve, sea green, and aqua spell purity and serenity; and so on. Within these divisions appear rooms, vignettes, and outdoor tableaux that evoke the desired feeling, accompanied by some authorial musings about the inspiration for each. Food and nature, of course, are well represented. James Merrell's photographs of the fairly minimalist decor are clear, detailed, and evocative of each particular color-emotion swatch. Best of all, these ideas can be translated into any budget. Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!! A book for us "outside the box" decorators, Jun 17 2004
This review is from: Think Color: Rooms to Live in (Hardcover)
I will preface this review by saying: If you want a "how to" decorating book, with step by step instructions and perfectly laid out rooms that you can easily duplicate by buying each piece in the book, this book is not for you. If you, like me, are looking for decorating books that are a little outside the box... a book that gives you new, fresh ideas with inspirations stemming from items you aesthetically love (the pearly pink of the inside of a conch shell found on vacation, the smooth sophisticated grey from a river stone) and build a room around it... you have found the book you have been searching for!

Anyone artistic who loves great photography and modern decorating will love this book. What I loved most about Think Color was that the colors and color themes used in this book were not over the top. No bright orange walls with red furniture. The colors were tasteful, modern and very do-able for the average homeowner. Even if you are a renter and cannot alter your wall color, this book gives you PLENTY of ideas for using color in other ways (mainly through use of flowers indoors.)

Particularly helpful is the way the book is organized... by color groupings -- so much easier on the eyes then those books with a different color scheme on each page, in no order whatsoever. I received this book about a week ago and have already gone through it several times, putting post it notes on pages that sparked ideas. This is a modern homeowners dream come true-a book without the stringent guidelines of a decorating book, but packed full of endless ideas for contemporary color and accessories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, Colorful Modern!!, Mar 25 2003
By
Silligirl (San Leandro, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Think Color: Rooms to Live in (Hardcover)
I've been poring through tons of magazines and books, searching for examples of modern style with lots of bold color, and this book has it. It is at the top of my list of sources of inspiration for decorating my new home.

I agree with another reviewer who said that it does not provide basics of color design, and yet another reviewer who claimed it did not have enough about the rooms themselves. The book does offer ideas for bringing color into your living space, through the furnishings, as well as when you entertain.
If you dislike modern styles and bold colors, then don't get this book. It's not for you.

If you are tired of looking at taupes, mochas, chocolates, beiges, creams, grays, "sand", etc., then this book should provide some great ideas for color combinations and ways to infuse your rooms with color.
