Product Description

The Third Crop: A personal and historical journey into the photo albums and shoeboxes of the Slocan Valley 1800s to early 1940s. The history of the Slocan Valley is synonymous with the people who have travelled through it, enjoyed its abundant resources and built their homes and communities there. Acclaimed Canadian author Rita Moir, who has made her home in the valley since 1975, is one of those people. In her new book The Third Crop, Moir embarks on a personal journey through old photographs and memorabilia of the Slocan Valley found in private albums, dusty shoeboxes and community archives. Along the way, from a perspective that only a long-time local can provide, Moir skilfully and passionately recounts the stories, industry, joys and tragedies of an era that was pivotal in forming the human character and landscape of the Slocan Valley as it is today. The Third Crop serves a visual feast to lovers of the province’s history, with more than 160 historic photographs beautifully juxtaposed with contemporary images of the valley. Moir’s insights into the history of a place she deeply loves and respects, and her reflections on her experiences living there, are a significant contribution to understanding this vibrant part of British Columbia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Visual and Historical Feast, Nov 20 2011
By Kristene Perron - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Third Crop (Paperback)
I may not be a history buff but I've always loved old photographs, the kind you might find tucked away in the back of your grandmother's closet. There's something about those little, intimate slices of life that feels like time travel to me. This is the kind of feeling Rita Moir has so perfectly captured in her book "The Third Crop".

"A personal and historical journey into the photo albums and shoe boxes of the Slocan Valley 1800's to 1940s" the description on the cover promises. And, as you read through the beautifully designed pages, you get the sensation that you are indeed sitting at someone's kitchen table, pulling yellowed photographs from an old shoebox as you're told the stories of that era, of that place, of those people. This is not so much a book as it is a time machine.

Though this book will have special relevance to those who live, or have lived, in or around the Slocan Valley, anyone who enjoys images and stories of the past will adore it. The photos alone would be reason enough to delve into these pages, but Moir also tells the story of the Slocan Valley and its inhabitants with an honesty and love that brings every picture to life.

Lovers of history and good stories, (and shoeboxes full of old treasures), should not pass up a chance to savour this collection.
