Product Description

2008 digitally remastered and expanded edition of their sophomore album featuring five bonus tracks: single versions of 'I Radiate', 'Some Fun', 'War Song' and 'Don't Talk To Me (I'm Shy)' plus a live version of 'The Square'. The Passions were one of the most critically respected Pop groups of the '80s, best known for their huge hit single 'I'm In Love With A German Film Star', among the most distinctive, atmospheric records of the era. Label mates with the likes of The Cure and Associates, the group's original studio albums have never before been re-released. This is the band's most commercially successful album, originally released on Polydor Records in 1981.The package has been assembled with completely unpublished photographs from the band's own archive, alongside the memories of all four original members, and a breakdown of the rationale and recording of each and every track. Cherry Red.

5.0 out of 5 stars much needed remastered reissue of early 80s alternative band Aug. 1 2008
By Daniel W. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
So yeah, "I'm in love with a German Film Star" was really their only song that got much attention on alternative radio, but thanks to labels like Cherry Red, many of these early 80s 'new wave'/'post-punk' bands are having their full catalog of music preserved on CD. This is alternative art rock with female vocal, part b-52s, part Pretenders, part Bow Wow Wow, but never very commercial or pop. Bonus tracks, not currently listed on amazon's track listing are:

11. I Radiate
12. Some Fun
13. War Song
14. Don't Talk To Me (I'm Shy)
15. The Square (live version)

Now let's cross our fingers that Cherry Red will make the follow-up LP, "Sanctuary", available on CD, with bonus tracks such as the 12" mix of the song "Sanctuary", because my vinyl 12" single is sounding pretty worn right about now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Just a "One-Hit Wonder" April 12 2009
By Best Of All - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
It could be easy to dismiss the band as a "one-hit wonder" - the single, which is on this 1981 album, I'm in Love with a German Film Star, had modest success on the UK chart (peaking at #25) - but the dreamy sound and vision of Barbara Gogan was an interesting foundation to what became a trail for the post-punk sound.

Formed in 1978, the band had consistent line-up changes, but Gogan seemingly had the venue by the time this album was released to explore intriguing avenues within a solid pop framework. The five bonus tracks - four "7-inch" mixes and one live - show the potential of the group with the focus on well-crafted music geared to "pop" radio.

The group disbanded in 1983 and the trio of studio albums issued in the early-1980s are virtually impossible to find. This re-issue is an excellent (and only easy) means to get acquainted with a band that was showing a way to the new wave.

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been waiting for this! Dec 10 2008

Finally, one of The Passions albums on CD! It took long enough. I love The passions, and this is an excellent album. If you heard tracks from this LP, on the radio, when the album was released, then it's a gem. However, it might sound boring and dated to folks who formed their musical tastes around grunge or rap.

If you're a fan of the following groups, you're likely to enjoy The Passions: Dislocation Dance, Martha And The Muffins, The Cyclones, The Photos, Mari Wilson & The Wilsations, Altered Images; Bette Bright.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good to be back Feb. 3 2009
By Mark J. Pearce - Published on Amazon.com

I've got "Passion Plays" on cassette tape, circa 1985. And a dead Nakamichi tape deck so I haven't listened to The Passions for ten years or more. A favourite back then, so great to see this re-issued on CD.

And great to hear again, seems fresh as ever.

If you like the poppier bits of the Cure you'll like this. Lots of jangling guitar, great beats and interesting composition. And some great female vocals not too far away from Toyah Wilcox.

Great to hear some songs not on Passion Plays. But I'm still hankering to hear some of the other songs from that compilation - Some-one Special, Africa Mine, Jump for Joy, The Letter, Love is Essential, Your Friend, Sanctuary. So go ahead, make my day and release the other Passions recordings, why don't you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Speechless! Aug. 19 2010

I happened to stumble upon this album, just buy browsing through recommended similar tastes, from c.d.'s I've bought in the past here on Amazon.com. I decided to click on this title and give the samples a listen. I fell Head Over Heels with this one, from the very first sample I listened to. I was born in 1980 and have fond memories of that decade. Although this band never reached the U.S. (unless you lived in places like N.Y. or California back then). Having never heard of this band I immediately purchased a copy right away! I discovered this album last year in September. It is to die for. The album has a realistic vibrant dreamy atmosphere that still holds up today. You just do not hear good music like this anymore. I will admit that not all music in the 80's was great. It was only great if you knew back then where to look. Bands like Siouxsie & The Banshees, Altered Images (mainly their debut album for me), Joy Division, etc, were great to listen to. If it wasn't for punk music back then, we wouldn't have today's so-called Alternative Rock. This is fine Indie-Art-Rock for its time. I even found this band on myspace and talked to the drummer "Richard Williams" of the band, and told them how I really admire their tunes. They even gave me a pleasant reply back!I even purchased a used copy of their rough edged album on Vinyl "Michael & Miranda" even downloaded Sanctuary and actually got a hold of "Passion Plays" on C.D. from Amazon's U.K. Store! Which does feature the 12 inch single "Sanctuary" and also the 7 single "Africa Mine". I hope their first and 3rd albums get released on C.D. soon. Highlights on this album for me are: Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 & 14. Buy it while you can just in case in the near future Cherry Red may stop Pressing Copies.
