Review

'Very funny and scapel-sharp' THE BOOKSELLER "[A] magnificently funny family saga...It's amazing what can happen in the hands of the casually brilliant author. Tropper steadily ratchets up the multigenerational mayhem, often involving unwieldy lust or vociferous inter-sibling squabbling, with the calm authority of someone who knows his characters from deep within his kishkes - that's Yiddish for "guts"... I urge with all my heart and kishkes: Read this one! Read and weep with laughter." US ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY "[A] smartly comic novel...Tropper goes on to introduce a darkly entertaining bunch of dysfunctional relatives...In assembling the book's cast of characters, Tropper achieves a lively mix...Although Mr. Tropper's dialogue here is fresh and fast, his book also has ballast." NEW YORK TIMES "This is a beautiful novel about men -- their lust and rage and sweetness. Read it." THE WASHINGTON POST The gifted and funny Jonathan Tropper returns with the often side-splitting, mostly heartbreaking This Is Where I Leave You...real and harrowing - when it's not hilarious." USA TODAY "...Often hilarious and often heartbreaking...Consistently surprising. Tropper keeps the reader off balance by changing the allegiances between siblings and spouses, friends and enemies, lovers and losers, and the result is a novel that charms by allowing for messes, loose ends, and the reality that there's only one sure ending for everyone." LA TIMES "The novel is artful and brilliant, filled with colorful narratives and witty dialogue...Tropper gives a genuine portrayal of marriage, sibling rancor, and the loss of a parent. The subject matter is dismal at times, but Tropper...can find the funny in any situation." ASSOCIATED PRESS 'sharply observed, beautifully bitter and very funny tale of dysfunctional family relationships.' BELLA 'A frank but funny take on relationships.' WOMAN 'Death, divorce and unemployment become the stuff of no-holds-barred comedy in an ultimately tender tale of dysfunctional family life.' BLOOMBERG.COM 'funny, heartfelt and refreshing. An excellent read.' ESSENTIALS 'Hilarious and heartbreaking' WOMAN'S WAY 'You can't go wropng with a book which opens with someone's testicles on fire!' -- KARIN SLAUGHTER DAILY EXPRESS --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Book Description

The death of Judd Foxman’s father marks the first time that the entire Foxman family—including Judd’s mother, brothers, and sister—have been together in years. Conspicuously absent: Judd’s wife, Jen, whose fourteen-month affair with Judd’s radio-shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public.

Simultaneously mourning the death of his father and the demise of his marriage, Judd joins the rest of the Foxmans as they reluctantly submit to their patriarch’s dying request: to spend the seven days following the funeral together. In the same house. Like a family.

As the week quickly spins out of control, longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed, and old passions reawakened. For Judd, it’s a weeklong attempt to make sense of the mess his life has become while trying in vain not to get sucked into the regressive battles of his madly dysfunctional family. All of which would be hard enough without the bomb Jen dropped the day Judd’s father died: She’s pregnant.

This Is Where I Leave You is Jonathan Tropper's most accomplished work to date, a riotously funny, emotionally raw novel about love, marriage, divorce, family, and the ties that bind—whether we like it or not.

This review is from: This Is Where I Leave You (Hardcover)
This is the most enjoyable book I have read in years! How many times have you had to close a book so you can finish your belly laugh before you read on? Well it happened half a dozen times to me reading this book! My friend Greg got so sick of hearing me laugh, he left the room. Then when it was his turn, I had to listen to him! He predicts this book will become the next Catcher in the Rye and a must read for anyone in a family. I am not sure about that but I do know that John Tropper has captured the true essence of family - warts and all! And in the end the story is redemptive, realistic and very satisfying. Thank you John Tropper for making my summer!

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a fluffer book for when you have nothing better to read., Jan 19 2011
This review is from: This Is Where I Leave You (Hardcover)
TIWILY, is like reading a screen play for a cheesy 80's high school movie throwback. It would star either John Cusak or Adam Sandler, quite similar to some of those painfully predictable adult comedies they've already done where the protagonist revisits his past life/hometown and "craziness" ensues that "changes their lives forever". The jokes are utterly predictable and fairly low brow, not in a slap stick way, just lame). The narrative is a linear storyline that starts off with potential but ends straight into the land of over-imagined-over-analyzed fluff.

The cover is pretty, the writing is easy to follow, and it's a book you can somewhat relate to, albeit learn nothing from. If this novel were turned into a sitcom it would be the type of television show networks air during off-season, which problem gets canceled after the 1st season. Know what I mean?

1.0 out of 5 stars Dommage qu'il n'y ait pas "0 étoile", Sep 13 2011
