Oh, how I love this series - had to cross the Amazon border and get my copy for viewing in the states - to show to my friends who live further south and have no chance to see it otherwise. Will definitely buy Season Two and Three (and so on and so on). The cast is tremendous, the storylines seem so 'real'. So many other lawyer shows deal only with 'high society'. Not Wonderland. The writers cast their stories in the world around us. Great writing. Great acting. Great show. Great DVD's - nicely packaged.

I work with seriously mentally ill people, and I see them go through the court system every day. This show is the first legal drama I've ever seen that even addresses the concept of mental health court or the realities of being crazy in court. The first episode's Kafka-esque outline of the case of Mr. Orsos (Orkos) is just excruciating to watch and all too realistic.
Thinking about going into psychiatry? Watch this show. Completely UNLIKE Law and Order. My only frustration - we never find out what happens eventually - much like real life in some of these cases.
Can't wait for the 2nd season to come out...

This is Wonderland is a fabulous Canadian series. For those who don't know it takes place in Toronto's municipal courts and deals mostly with the downtrodden and mentally unstable. The series is both funny and heart wrenching with some very sharp writing. The cast is marvelous as are pretty much all the guest actors. This is Wonderland confirms that Canada has mnay excellent actors. But you don't have to be Canadian to enjoy it.

This is Wonderland is one of the very, very few legal series which provides a fairly realistic depiction of the lower-level courts, which are quite different than most television or film depictions of courtrooms. This is Wonderland also presents to viewers the reality faced by lawyers in lower level courts, where both the Crown (prosecution) and defense lawyers face crushing caseloads. Unlike many TV/movie depictions of courts, which would give the viewer the impression that our courts involve eloquent and painstakingly-researched arguments (which does occur on larger-scale trial cases or appeals), in lower courts there simply isn't time for detailed intellectual explanations except on an occasional extemporaneous manner, as shown at various points during these first-season episodes.

I have never encountered a television series or film which showed the depressing nature of mental health courts (i.e. parties being remanded to jail cells due to lack of beds available in the mental health hospital ward), as well as inconsistent criminal sentencing of defendants accused of rather minor offences. While we all would like to think that any defendant going to court and facing a judge would be respectful and courteous, this series provides several depictions of defendants who brazenly talk back to the judge, interrupting their own attorney, and essentially "shooting themselves in the foot".

Alice De Raey (Cara Pifko) came out of law school with idealistic notions about the day-to-day grinding of the criminal justice system. A fellow defense attorney - public defender, Eliot Sacks (Michael Riley), teaches Alice the ropes of surviving in the jungle-like environment of providing criminal defense in a lower-court setting.

I am not going to complain to much about this show being cancelled by the CBC, except that I am dissapointed that it was and CBC had better have something amazing up its sleeves to replace it.
But enough on that. This show was brilliant, Season 1 naturally introduced you to all of main characters from Alice to Elliot and to all of the judges, whose names I can't recall right now but they can be found in the Cast section of this site. All of the characters are expertly played and even the temporary characters that just come in for one show are done extremely well.
This show mixed comedy and drama with ease, you can go from feeling down while watching a scene in mental health court to laughing watching Elliot use his own logic to try to convince people that his clients are innocent.
Speaking of mental health court, after seeing Corner Gas I can't help but smile at the fact that the judge that presides over mental health court is non other then Eric 'Oscar' Peterson.
As for the DVD itself, it comes on 3 discs with all of Season 1's episodes, all in widescreen, which is nice to see. Theren't aren't many special features with it, there are a few never aired TV promos and such but nothing spectacular, which doesn't bother me since I didn't get it expecting anything more.
The bottom line is that this a great TV show, it may not be as famous as Corner Gas or Trailer Park Boys, but it's a true gem that deserved a better fate and if you are a fan of good TV then you definitely need to pick it up.

I remember watching this show on CBC - loving it then and wondering why it was cancelled. The story plots manage to balance the humour in the life of people who end up on the wrong side of the law and also open your eyes to the reality of a broad spectrum of society.

The acting is superb and utterly Canadian.
