Better than I thought....,

This review is from: This Year I Will...: How to Finally Change a Habit, Keep a Resolution, or Make a Dream Come True (Hardcover)
I'm usually weary about self-help books, but for some reason I picked this one up. The book is short little chapters that offer bite size advice on how to chage a bad habit or create a new one. There's technically nothing new in this book, but what i found refreshing was its approach. Usually self-help books give you a set a rules to follow or step by step regime to get to your goal. this book recognizes that people are different and the methods are always different and shifting and what is important is your mental attitude towards change: recognizing it's hard work, persistence and being more generous and optimistic when you fail. It's a lot more helpful and cheaper than buying a book for changing every bad habit (ie. getting out of debt, weight loss, finding a new career etc).

I loved it: both the format and the lesson. M.J. Ryan knows the human heart. The book has 3 main parts : 1) preparing to change; 2) getting into action and 3) keeping going along with 12 tips for keeping your promise to yourself. I also like the quotes. Even though the "chapters" are short, I could not put the book down, just reading one more... until I was through. In simple words, ackowledging that changing a habit is easier said than done, M.J. Ryan shows you how to address your inertia and face your fears by bringing changes to your lifestyle, one step at a time or, if you are stuck, in tiny steps. I also found out that I had many things to celebrate and how to tap into the energy I used to overcome former challenges in order to change my other habits. I am looking forward to this coming year!

I've looked at a lot of books on the subject of changing habits. This is one of the best. And cheap.
