Delightful,
By
This review is from: Thorn, The (Paperback)
I think I could consider myself a die-hard fan of Beverly Lewis. I enjoy her Amish novels and love the way she writes. Her novels not only are well written but mystery often intertwine with love. And The Thorn which is the first book of The Rose Trilogy is filled with interesting characters and events that affects them. You get to love Rose and her family as you read through the book. You discover their neighbours - the Bishop family - who also adopted a son whom seems to have trouble adjusting to his Amish family. And then the older sister comes back home in the hope to reconnect with her Amish roots. Problem is she brought her daughter and left her husband behind. Then there is the discovery of a young woman living hidden with her father. At the end of the book, you wonder what will happen to some of these delightful characters. What other mysteries does Beverly Lewis has under her sleeve? A few are already listed in the epilogue but knowing that two other books will complete the trilogy I am certain that she will come up with other mysteries before the series is complete. I am quite curious and look forward to read the following two books of this trilogy. Book two is planned to come out in April 2011 and the title would be The Judgment. Well crafted Amish tale,
By Christina Banks "Stina Rose" (Deep River, ON Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Thorn, The (Paperback)
Up front, I'm not a huge fan of Amish fiction. However, I did enjoy Beverly's newest release. The thorn is full of real struggles by real people. I appreciated the way that Beverly handled the ever day life of the Amish. She's not afraid to give her characters faults, however, I do feel that like most Amish fiction, there is a bit of romanticizing the Amish lifestyle - not a lot, but some.I find it interesting the way that Beverly ties in a mystery in the middle of this story. It adds an interesting dimension to an already good storyline. All the characters have struggles and desires that drive them to action. The writing was easy, and enjoyable to read - showing how well Beverly crafted this novel. I recommend this book to lovers of Amish fiction. Beverly Lewis is a master at this genre, and this book is no exception. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Endearing Amish Characters,
By
This review is from: Thorn, The (Paperback)
Love this first book in the trilogy.Rose the main character has many passions and adventures she tries to hide from her family and community. She tries to keep a close friendship with the Bishop's adoptive son Nick. They secretly spend time together riding horses under the dark of night. The book goes through Rose struggle to please her community and family and reveling in her friendship with Nick. Rose doesn't want to end up like her sister Hen who is struggling in her marriage to a man who didn't grow up in the Amish community. Hen is torn between a life with her husband and living a life with the Amish community. Rose is determined to honour her baptism even though she Nick wants her to experience the outside "english" world. Rose's story continues in the Judgement.
