Book Description

Nov 15 2011
Lorri Neilsen Glenn in Threading Light: Explorations in Loss and Poetry offers a compelling and poetic work. This collection of linked prose explores Neilsen Glenn’s journey into poetry and deepening understanding of poetry as a model of secular compunction that serves as a form of prayer. Here are personal essays about loss from childhood through to adulthood as well as essays about Neilsen Glenn’s initiation into the practice of poetry that was both timely and necessary. Neilsen Glenn is the author of four books of poetry and her non-fiction has been shortlisted and won awards in contests sponsored by Prairie Fire, Event, as well as the National Magazine Awards. She has been the Poet Laureate of Halifax.

I love this book! The writer takes the reader on a personal journey from grief to writing, and everything in between. I found this memoir to be spiritually comforting and left me with an understanding of how poetry and loss are indeed threaded with light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chronicle Herald review Mar 4 2012

from Halifax's Chronicle Herald, March 4, 2012:

"This book of fluid form is a river of remembrances, a creed for creativity. Threading Light is a conversation and an offering, a gift to share....
Threading Light: Explorations in Loss and Poetry
Reading Lorri Neilsen Glenn's new book, Threading Light, is like having a long, deep conversation with a trusted friend.
"Language is a hinge that connects us with the flesh of our experience," writes Glenn on the opening page of the book. I will follow a writer who can craft this sentence anywhere the pages lead.

Threading Light: Explorations in Loss and Poetry is a "parcel of essay and verse and anecdote," writes Glenn. It is a witnessing of the smallest details and the largest losses that shape a life, a community, a world.

The book is divided into a trinity. The first section illuminates stories of loss in Glenn's own life. The second part explores loss and grief in the world and the concluding third weaves a tapestry of the communities we create as we share experiences and words."

5.0 out of 5 stars Evocative, Passionate Prose and Poetry Jan 22 2012
By Arlene
I highly recommend this book. It transports the reader to a world of vivid images and emotionally-charged, captivating stories. The text flows smoothly and beautifully; yet with the succinct, razor-sharp word choice of a talented poet. There is laughing-out-loud humour, an important ingredient when dealing with grief and loss. Buy it!!
