Three Cheers for Me is the opening salvo of Donald Jack's Bandy Papers, a series of light, silly satires on military life starring a hapless Ontario lad who enlists to battle the Boche for King and Country and, defying both the odds and the social stratification of the British Empire, not only survives but prospers in his new life. The sometime hero of Three Cheers for Me (winner of the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour) is Bartholomew Bandy, a staid minister's son from the Ottawa Valley who's blessed with an unforgettably large, bland, equine face and a world view that excludes such devilish temptations as liquor, women, cursing, and culture. Bandy is initially sent to the trenches, but he acquits himself with such wrongheaded valour that he is not only promoted but also recommended as a prospective pilot for the Royal Flying Corps--anything to get him away from his old commanding officer.
Jack writes broad, shambling farce, a chaotic form of comedy that is well suited to the daily disorder of warfare but less effective when the story returns to the home front and Bandy finds himself amidst the carefully structured madness of the British upper classes. Still, the novel holds together, and even its most unfocused passages break into flights of random, hysterical humour. --Jack Illingworth

Although I read the book all the way through. It was not realy my sort of humour.It seemed rather contrived and obvious -either I am out of date or the book is.

Ah! "Bandy Bandyensis"! A nightmare to his superiors, parents and other riff and beloved by his totally bemused compadres - male and female. All while cruising through life with an obliviousnous to his effect upon others that is positively breathtaking. Until that is, he meets his match: a monstrosity of English Plumbing which leaves him a complete wreck after one of the most side-splitting description's of the aformentioned device's operational facilities - or lack thereof - I've ever read that left me in tears of laughter and my ribs aching viciously - quite viciously!. Not to be outdone however, our hero despatches most of his superiors to the padded cell blubbering for mercy or a much needed avenue of escape - generally from Bandy's voice. Something guaranteed to eviscerate anyone's aural facilities at 100 paces with no little difficulty! Then there's "backsliding"......Get the entire Bandy series and plenty of rib-strapping tape. You're going to need it!

Bandying with Bandy,

I first read this book nearly 25 years ago. I recently re-read it after discovering it in my attic, and found that not only had it lost non of its charm in the intervening years, but in fact had matured into something that I could savour with pleasure over a glass of wine. If Biggles was crossed with Blackadders Baldrick, then this would be the result. A sensitive yet humourous rendering of life in the trenches and in the pioneering days of aerial warfare that isn't too heavy going. This is a classic waiting in the wings.
