Product Description

Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. --Doug Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Lovely, A joy to watch June 19 2006
Format:DVD
I love this film. And I am fifteen. I have always liked it. It was my favorite film as a toddler.

I know you probably already know all about the story about Thumbelina, but I am going to tell you anyway. The movie version.

It starts out with the swallow (I don't know how to spell his name but it sounds like shockimo with an accent)telling the story of how Thumbelina came to be. It goes on to show how Thumbelina thinks she is the only one her size. She then meets Prince Corneliouse (I don't think I spelt that right) whom she falls in love with. He promises to visit her the next day, but in the night she is captured by toads. The mother wants Thumbelina to marry her son. With the help of the swallow she escapes and tries to find her way home. In the mean time Corneliouse discoveres her missing and tries to find her. But winter is coming! Thumbelina is on her way with her friend the swallow looking for the veil of the fairies (I think that is what it is called). She is however held up by a beetle who in the end doesn't like her. The toad, who has been searching for Thumbelina, gets him to nab the prince for a trap. Corneliouse has also gotten himself in trouble. He has fallen into a lake and the lake froze! Thumbelina finds herself awakening in Mrs. Feildmouse's den. They go to meet Mr. Mole who likes Thumbelina very much and talks Mrs. Feildmouse into helping him woo Thumbelina. Thinking Corneliouse dead Thumbelina finnaly agrees. The Beetle has found the Prince and brought him to the toad and he tells him where Thumbelina is. The toad goes off to get her. The prince is then freed from the ice by some bugs. During her wedding Thumbelina changes her mind about the mole and runs off. Now everybody is after her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Question Oct. 17 2013
By Sophia
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars An under-rated Don Bluth production April 30 2004
By Jakki
Format:DVD
I didn't see "Thumbelina" until I was in my 20's, but since I love animation, it didn't make much difference. I love this movie and finally got it on DVD a couple days ago. Jodi Benson did another great job lending her voice to the lead character and the music was great too. The only complaints I have about the movie, to echo other reviewers, is that some of the animals in the farm were very strange looking. Also, I couldn't help but notice that Thumbelina was constantly losing her balance no matter where she was standing. Still, I think Don Bluth did an excellent job on "Thumbelina" and that it deserved much more recognition. I admit, I'm a softy for fairy tales, and I actually love her innocent, naive personality. It was great to see her make the right decision at the end though, even knowing she might be alone. Unlike what some reviewers have said, I think that makes her a great role model. We all have to go through a learning process. But without being silly and over analyzing the film's psychological effect on society, it's just a fun and enjoyable movie that I would recommend for any young girl or adult who's young at heart.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, terrible, terrible Nov. 7 2002
Format:VHS Tape
Don Bluth's work for Disney was lackluster at best (anyone remember the Rescuers?), and his solo films are even worse.
Thumbelina contains every Disney cliche, except poorly done. In addition, the animation is terible - varying from awkward rotoscoping of the human-like characters to the blatant theft of Disney character designs from the 40's (most notably the bugs and the barnyard animals during the film's execrable opening song.
The story itself seems almost sadistic in its treatment of the strangely coquettish and precocious Marilyn Monroe-esque heroine. She is repeatedly abducted by disgusting creatures (including Gilbert Gottfried and an obsessed stalker of a frog with a nearly-impenetrable Mexican accent) who all seem to have "romantic" designs on her. She is abused and abased repeatedly until the stunningly vapid lass is rescued by her fairy prince.
Oh yeah, did I mention how terrible the animation is?

5.0 out of 5 stars Plus 5 and 5 more Aug. 10 2003
Format:VHS Tape
My grand daughter enjoyed this movie so much. It was so incredible to watch her relate to the music. And towards the end, she smiled so big, she clapped her hands with joy, and she walked to bed dancing. This will definitely become one of her favorite movies. This was a excellent buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Disney March 31 2002
Format:VHS Tape
I just rented this movie this weekend and watched it with my six year old daughter. The story line is not so predictable like Disney ones are, and there are a lot of twists and turns in the plot. I don't like the fact that this is again another "My Prince Will Come, and we'll live Happily Ever After" story like all the others, but at least there is MORE to this story than that.
It shows that males can lie and cheat to get a girl...and that sometimes you have to look out for yourself and don't believe everything you hear. So based on that I give it 5 stars...plus the singing is great, and so is the animation. This movie is not cheesy like some others you may find for kids. Definitely get this movie, it is more than worth it.
