Book Description

A lot can change in three months: wars can be decided, nations can be forged... or entire species can be brought to the brink of annihilation. The Morningstar Virus, an incredibly virulent disease, has swept the face of the planet, infecting billions. Its hosts rampage, attacking anything that remains uninfected. Even death can't stop the virus-its victims as cannibalistic shamblers. Scattered across the world, embattled groups have persevered. For some, surviving is the pinnacle of achievement. Others hoard goods and weapons. And still others leverage power over the remnants of humanity in the form of a mysterious cure for Morningstar. Francis Sherman and Anna Demilio want only a vaccine, but to find it, they must cross a countryside in ruins, dodging not only the infected, but also the lawless living. The bulk of the storm has passed over the world, leaving echoing thunder and softly drifting ashes. But for the survivors, the peril remains, and the search for a cure is just beginning...

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive Zombie Action, Jan 12 2010

This is by far my favourite Zombie series I've read. . .and I've read many.
The action is kick a*% and the highly likable characters' actions are realistic.
I think Recht finally created the perfect zombies. . .fast and feral in the onset of infection, but slow and shambling after the body physically "dies." Recht's zombies make for much more intense action than you find in your typical zombie novel/story. The overall storyline is extremely interesting and the non-zombie dangers make for some unforseen twists and turns. When I read Thunder and Ashes (same goes for book 1 - Plague of the Dead) I could not put it down. . .read it in 2 days and plan to read both books again. I'm anxiously awaiting book 3 in this trilogy, aswell as anything else Recht puts out there in the zombie genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good continuation of the first novel, Sep 9 2010

This review is from: Thunder and Ashes (Paperback)
For the most part, Thunder & Ashes is a great book, mostly because Recht came up with an interesting (and plausible) way to have both fast (sprinters) and slow (shamblers) zombies. To me that alone was worth the price of admission.

The storyline follows two groups (one small and one large) of survivors of the zombie apocalypse. The small group, a scientist and a journalist are heading to Omaha from Washington DC, where it is believed a cure has been developed for the Morningstar Strain. Standing in their way is group of rogue government operatives who are trying to track down the fugitives from Washington DC. Along the way, both groups encounter roadblocks to completing their mission. Meanwhile, the larger group of survivors is composed of soldiers and misfits who landed in Oregon are racing east hoping to meet up with those coming from Washington DC.

The action is quite good and pacing adequate. Characters are fairly well developed and not one-dimensional stereotypical cut-outs like in so many other zombie books (the evil army officer, the criminal seeking redemption, the family man who is the sole survivor, etc). I really liked the fact that the cast of survivors was international in make-up.

Unfortunately, the author passed away late last year (Dec 2009), so it's not known when the third and final book in the trilogy will be published - although his estate plans too. Let's hope it comes to pass, as this is a pretty good trilogy so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Dec 27 2009

This, along with the first book, are two of my favorite Zombie/Infected novels, along with WWZ and Day by Day Armageddon. The character development is actually pretty good, and the multiple story lines and sub plots keep the book interesting. I read it in about 2 or 3 days, as it was very hard to put down.

Can't wait for the third book!
