From Amazon

Novelist Ted Dekker spins an action-packed story of drug cartels, the CIA, and the power of God to redeem tragedy for good in his inspirational thriller Thunder of Heaven. Life in Venezuela holds nothing but good things for Tanya Vandervan, her missionary family, and her love interest, the musclebound Shannon Ritcherson, who lives with his parents on an adjoining coffee plantation. When terrorists take over the land, both families are murdered and Tanya and Shannon believe each other to be dead. Grieving her losses, Tanya moves to the United States, where she changes her identity and seeks to lay her nightmarish past to rest. Years later, Tanya is inexorably pulled back to Venezuela by visions from God, and finds that Casius, an assassin who has his own agenda for revenge, may hold the key to questions about her past and her future. Dekker relies on a fast-paced plot rather than finely crafted prose to move his story along, and those who like their novels served up with plenty of heroics and a dash of romance will find this an engaging tale. --Cindy Crosby

From Booklist

Tanya Vandervan, daughter of missionaries, and the rather mysterious "Shannon," son of a Danish planter, grow up in a kind of Eden in the jungles of Venezuela in Dekker's Thunder of Heaven. Their childhood is brutally ended when both sets of parents are killed, the casualties of a complicated, rather bizarre CIA plot against drug runners. Almost accidentally, both Tanya and Shannon survive, each thinking the other is dead. The reader encounters them eight years later. Tanya is nearly finished with medical school, but she is suddenly beset by the awful memories she's suppressed, and with a new set of visions about a plot to blow up the world. God compels her to return to Venezuela. Meanwhile, Shannon, now a rogue CIA agent, is also drawn to Venezuela, but for reasons that are not quite clear. Dekker's thriller is uneven but a real page-turner--his jungle survival scenes read like the best of David Morrell, and his description of a small nuclear explosion off the coast of Florida is upsettingly precise. 5.0 out of 5 stars Ted topps Peretti barely;, Aug 1 2003

I still remember what coaxed me to buy this book. I was in a Christian Book Store and saw 3 Ted Dekker books, and they were of course, The Martyr's Song Series. On Heaven's Wager I noticed that Frank Peretti had recommended it, but when I looked at the back of the book, I didn't think it would be fast enough for me (silly me!) So I got Thunder of Heaven and asked for the other 2 books for Christmas. Needless to say I was impressed! Now some people might be wondering why I would mention Frank Peretti. That is a very important part of my story. You see my friends, Frank Peretti was my favorite Christian Fiction author, until he recommended Ted Dekker. Frank Peretti is still an awesome writer, but Dekker topps Peretti just barely. Ted Dekker does this. He puts ordinary people in a situation only God could get them out of, so you are in for a trip out of your comfort zone when you read him. I own all of Dekker's work, and it is worth twice as much as you pay for it. I've heard it been said that a layman is just an ordinary person who does extraordinary things for Jesus Christ. Ted Dekker, you truly are a layman for everyone who reads your work, and an inspiration. Praise God for this man!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff...but Ted Dekker can outdo Ted Dekker!, May 1 2004

If I'd never read a Ted Dekker novel, I might have given Thunder of Heaven an eager five stars. It's action-packed, full of true romance, terrorist plots, military machismo, and thought-provoking psychological suspense. Blend into this marvelous mix some spirituality that is authentic--not canned--not forced--and you have a unique style that I would describe as the Ted Dekker genre.

So, why four stars? I read Thr3e and Black before coming upon this one. As good as Thunder of Heaven is, it relies more heavily on description than his later ones. We do get a good feel for the jungle, and for the thoughts going through each of the characters. However, Dekker seems to allow events to drive the stories more in his later novels. The description and narration are more nuanced and subtle. A second factor, is that Dekker uses a plot device in both Thunder of Heaven and Thr3e relating to character identity. It works well in Thunder of Heaven, but more masterfully in Thr3e.

Bottom-line: Buy, read, share! Only Ted Dekker can beat Ted Dekker in this style of writing. If you must choose only one of the three in the Martyr's series, I would go with Heaven Weeps (#2). Each does stand alone. However, the entire series is worth having, as are his more recent works--Thr3e, Black, and soon-to-be-released Red.

5.0 out of 5 stars He wrote this before 9-11, to his surprise, Mar 5 2004
By
Dori (Woodbine, Md.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thunder of Heaven (Paperback)
This book takes on the theme of terrorism coming to the shores of America. In his intro, Ted says that he wrote this before 9-11, which is eerie, in the way that this book seems to knowingly build on this terrorist attack; apparently the book was published a bit later than 2001. I think that in itself sets this book, and author, apart, because Dekker seems to be listening with his heart towards heaven, as he uses his talent dramatically to stage a cliffhanger. I could not put this book down, and was edgy if I had to do other things before I could get to the next chapter. The only dissapointment was that it ended. I've also read "Blink", which is a heart-pounder, that also couldn't be put down. I can't wait to read another of Ted's books. He's right up there with Perretti; they're both always dependable for thrilling books. I also appreciate that I can give these books to my kid's high-school friends, and the plots are exciting, and don't depend on filth to keep one glued to every page. I'm proud to recommend anything by Dekker.
