From Publishers Weekly

Even a very short, victorious shooting war against a disorganized, dispirited, vastly outnumbered and underequipped enemy is hell. That is the central message that Los Angeles Times correspondent Zucchino brings home startlingly well in this riveting account of the American military's lightning capture of Baghdad in April 2003. Zucchino (The Myth of the Welfare Queen) is an experienced, Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter, and he shows off his reportorial skills in this reconstruction of the "lightning armored strike" in Iraq that the military refers to as a "thunder run." The narrative focuses on the men who commanded and battled in the tank battles as the Americans fought their way to Iraq's capital city. It is often not a pretty picture, nor one for the faint of heart, because Zucchino unhesitatingly and graphically describes the violent and grisly fates that befell hundreds, if not thousands, of Iraqi Republican Guard troops and fedayeen militiamen, their Syrian allies (at the border) and the unfortunate civilians who were killed or wounded by the deadly high-tech American armored vehicles and their well-trained crews. He also does not shy away from intimately describing the deaths and injuries of American troops. The Americans who fought their way into Baghdad engaged in, according to Zucchino's account, a vicious, if short-lived, war. While the Americans overwhelmed the Iraqis on the road to Baghdad, U.S. troops faced periodic stiff resistance; rocket-propelled grenades caused death and destruction among the crews in the Bradley fighting vehicles. Zucchino tells his story primarily from the American troops' point of view, but does include a section describing the experiences of a Baath Party militia leader and some Republican Guard officers in this high-quality example of in-depth and evocative war reporting. First serial to Men's Journal.

From Booklist

It is a popular misconception that the city of Baghdad fell painlessly, like a ripe plum, into the hands of U.S. forces. True, the feared scenario of a protracted, Stalingrad-like siege did not emerge. However, as this intense and thrilling account makes clear, the capture of the city was no walkover. Zucchino is a foreign correspondent for the Los Angeles Times with extensive experience in war coverage. His account is a fast-paced, gritty, and frequently surprising story of men and women in combat, and he expertly interweaves the drama of individual human experiences with the broader strategic and tactical objectives. There are gut-wrenching, deeply disturbing accounts of slaughter, and Zucchino captures the sheer savagery of the early stages of the battle as Iraqi regular and irregular troops sought to parry the initial U.S. armored thrust into the city. Of course, inspiring examples of individual heroism are cited, but there is also a consistent, almost chilling, aura of cool professionalism--these men are superbly trained warriors, after all. Despite the relative inexperience of many of them, they display expertise in the art of high-tech killing. Zucchino's assertion that the conquest of Baghdad could revolutionize concepts of urban warfare is likely to be hotly debated, but this is an outstanding chronicle of an underreported battle of the war, and the buzz is likely to be loud. 3.0étoiles sur 5 No Black Hawk Down, but interesting, Aoû 25 2008
Par Jack Blatant (Ontario, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The cover of the book, as well as the opening comments and foreword, leave the reader in no doubt that this is supposed to be the heir apparent to Mark Bowden's fantastic book. This book has a great deal going for it: a surprising departure from standard US military doctrine, an audacious military operation, and one hell of a lot of blood and bullets. There is action aplenty, and even though the reader may know the overall outcome of the war, there is real tension over whether the Spartan Brigade will emerge relatively unscathed or absolutely mauled.

And yet, this book lacks something. I'm honestly not sure what it is precisely - whether it is a lack of any depth of characterization, whether it is a lack of clarity at certain moments in the action, or the absence of any significant understanding of the experiences of the Spartan Brigade's opponents, but where Black Hawk Down takes the reader into a visceral human understanding, Thunder Run leaves you still on the surface. Nevertheless, an enjoyable read.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A well researched history of the "Thunder Runs"., Juil 13 2004
An overall well done history of the "Thunder Runs" to demonstrate to the press, the Hussein Regime, and the world that the US was in Baghdad, and in Baghdad to stay. A gripping account of the mismatch in quality and quantity of forces, underscored with accounts of the gory details of combat.

This history shows overwhelmingly, that modern armor forces are matchless in dominating a low-tech enemy with poor local command and coordination. The toughness of the heavy US MBTs as well as the IFVs comes through in this book as cited in numerous examples. The overall toughness and adaptability of the US troops comes through as the overriding factor however. Using their skills and teamwork, the American soldier not only penetrated into the depths of the Hussein Palace complex, they then fought numerous battles to preserve logistical lines of contact, sometimes in thin skinned ammo trucks and fuel tankers in a hot battle zone, and then fought through the debilitating loss of the Brigade command post to an SSM to persevere against thousands of Ba'athists and Syrian mercenaries in making a claim to Baghdad's symbols of power.

In summation, a well researched book, written in clear pose, with a little bit of dry objectivity thrown in, a recommended read for amateur theorists and military enthusiasts.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Modern Urban Warfare, Juil 12 2004
Par "awo2" (Memphis TN) - Voir tous mes commentaires
As an Army Officer, I am very interested in hearing what tactics, techniques & equipment worked in Iraq and what didn't. While the Army has been gathering much of this information internally, a few books are now appearing to tell the story of what really happened during the march on Baghdad. Conventional wisdom and Army doctrine told us that urban warfare was not the ideal place to use armor. To secure the city would require that US forces set a siege while the light infantry (e.g., 82nd Airborne or 101st Air Assault Divisions) clear the city block by block. What the Second Brigade, Third Infantry Division (Mechanized) did was to simply rewrite Army doctrine. Aggressively employed, they proved that armor can be the supreme tool in urban warfare. There were several other lessons learned from the Third's charge ("Thunder Run"). The Army has had to rethink convoy procedures and other areas concerning logistical support in a "non-linear" battlefield. Furthermore, the division proved that organic fire support using mortars and self-propelled artillery is still critical to success in the "close battle", and that airpower has not replaced those important systems. The story is gripping, because the battle was a closely fought affair. The book is full of examples of how great our young soldiers are; for they are the best army in the world. David Zucchino was an embedded reporter with the division during the battle and he has done an outstanding job in telling the Third's story. Overall, this is an important book and undoubtedly the first of many that will tell of this conflict.
