The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a master class in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a) the show is in color and (b) it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, predating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armageddon by 30 years and more (the acting is better, too), and fetishizing gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here.

As for the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines--the real stars of the show--while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (license plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catchphrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (Spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company.) The puppet stunt work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nail-bitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood.

The Thunderbirds Mega Set contains 32 complete, uncut, and digitally remastered episodes on 12 DVDs. The four Gerry/Sylvia Anderson series with which I am familiar ("Thunderbirds", "Captain Scarlet", "UFO", and "Space 1999") all have much in common. At their best, they have high-spirited adventure, good character situations, campy humor, and gee-wiz sets, costumes, and gadgetry. At their worst, they have jaw dropping logical flaws, stock footage overused to the point of obvious inconsistency, and excruciatingly painful sci-babble.

"Thunderbirds", ironically enough, has the best acting of the four series. The exagerrated expressiveness of the puppets is delightful. Intentional or not, the humor of the series is its saving grace. The restaurant scene in "Path of Destruction" is outstanding, as is the champagne scene in "Danger at Ocean Deep". The episodes do tend to have absolutely the worst, most eye-popping plot gaps, and every now and then some pretty lame sci-babble will creep in. Also, the stories tend to ramble, as if they have a hard time filling in an hour-long format. The set could have been done with fewer discs (the final disc is a throwaway) but I'm still glad to have the complete set.

I used to watch these episodes on TV when I was a kid. Today I have my kids discover them and they like them! Everybody likes Gerry Anderson's series, Thunderbirds and others. At the time Thunderbirds were made, Gerry had a vision of the future in which everything is highly explosive! Hence the need for International Rescue. The details on the sets are amazing: all those machines, rockets, futuristic airplanes, control panels, scaled-down objects, vehicles, etc. Every puppet is dressed with sophisticated clothing and accessories. The best part is, it's not animation! Everything is real!

This series I saw sparingly growing up and was hard to see on television because it was not on on a regular basis. I am so glad to see this compilation. I thought this would arrive in its own box, but the picture quality makes up for not having a nice box it shows on the web page. I love the marionation and the stories. If one looks closely, one can see the strings when they do closeups on the puppets. But because of its original airdate in the 1960 s I have overlooked it and enjoy the show. Lady Penelope always fascinated me.
