Product Description

From Amazon.com

"Filmed in VIDECOLOR [explosions, drum roll, music builds to a climax] and SUPERMARIONATION"! The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a master class in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a) the show is in color and (b) it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, predating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armageddon by 30 years and more (the acting is better, too), and fetishizing gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here.

As for the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines--the real stars of the show--while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (license plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catchphrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (Spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company.) The puppet stunt work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nail-bitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood.

The Thunderbirds Mega Set contains 32 complete, uncut, and digitally remastered episodes on 12 DVDs. Bonus features include production stills photo galleries, two original 1965 "The Making of Thunderbirds" featurettes, the History of Thunderbirds, character biographies, and a Gerry Anderson biography/filmography. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't let your child grow up without Thunderbirds, Mar 26 2012

This review is from: Thunderbirds: The Complete Mega Set (DVD)
I bought this for my Son's third birthday. Having been born a year after this series was released, i grew up with Thunderbirds and so did all my friends. I give thunderbirds top marks because little boys absolutely love it, and it instills into children a lot of great virtues that we don't have in today's society. Jef Tracy is a billionaire industralist who uses his wealth to put together a secret rescue organization to save people when all conventional help is thwarted. His son's; John, Virgil, Gordon, Scott, and Alan pilot the 'Thunderbirds'.Little girls enjoy the show because of Lady Penelope - International Rescue's London agent who is often the secret conduit to orchestrate rescue's. She has a gadget laden pink Rolls Royce and a driver,"Parker",to assist at all turns. Having watched this with my Son, I came to realise how important this show was to my social development. It introduces toddlers to the real world, where bad things can happen, and people can and do get hurt and injured. However, all these explosions, crashes, and accidents happen to puppets and models which is less traumatic for a little boy to deal with. Often the accidents happen because the victims are not being responsible and suffer the consequences. A good example is the episode where two little boys are trapped in a mine because they did not tell anyone where they were going. Of course international Rescue get them out, but at no small risk to themselves. No one dies in Thunderbirds; bad things happen to bad people but they always live another day. Those at most peril during the episodes are usually the resuers themselves, but this stoic determination in the face of danger is what makes the tracy's great role models for children. Because they are a secret organization, they never recieve money or undue praise for a rescue. They are merely content with knowing they did all they could to save people's lives (they always do)and although living in paradise with everything they could ever need, they are content to have have lives fulfilled by knowing that they are making a positive contribtion to the world at large. I am well content with any of these characters being role models for my son, even Parker the reformed jewel thief!!

The four Gerry/Sylvia Anderson series with which I am familiar ("Thunderbirds", "Captain Scarlet", "UFO", and "Space 1999") all have much in common. At their best, they have high-spirited adventure, good character situations, campy humor, and gee-wiz sets, costumes, and gadgetry. At their worst, they have jaw dropping logical flaws, stock footage overused to the point of obvious inconsistency, and excruciatingly painful sci-babble.

"Thunderbirds", ironically enough, has the best acting of the four series. The exagerrated expressiveness of the puppets is delightful. Intentional or not, the humor of the series is its saving grace. The restaurant scene in "Path of Destruction" is outstanding, as is the champagne scene in "Danger at Ocean Deep". The episodes do tend to have absolutely the worst, most eye-popping plot gaps, and every now and then some pretty lame sci-babble will creep in. Also, the stories tend to ramble, as if they have a hard time filling in an hour-long format. The set could have been done with fewer discs (the final disc is a throwaway) but I'm still glad to have the complete set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five, four, three, two, one..., Jan 14 2011
This review is from: Thunderbirds: The Complete Mega Set (DVD)
I used to watch these episodes on TV when I was a kid. Today I have my kids discover them and they like them! Everybody likes Gerry Anderson's series, Thunderbirds and others. At the time Thunderbirds were made, Gerry had a vision of the future in which everything is highly explosive! Hence the need for International Rescue. The details on the sets are amazing: all those machines, rockets, futuristic airplanes, control panels, scaled-down objects, vehicles, etc. Every puppet is dressed with sophisticated clothing and accessories. The best part is, it's not animation! Everything is real!
