"Dean Koontz is not just a master of our darkest dreams, but also a literary juggler."—The Times, London

From the Paperback edition.

Book Description

A strange doll is left on Tommy Phan's front steps--stranger than anyone could ever imagine. Later he hears an odd popping sound and is intrigued to find it coming to life. Tommy pursues the thing as it scrambles away--and then is pursued by it as it evolves from a terrifying and vicious manikin into a larger, more formidable opponent bent on killing him. What in the world is this thing and why is it after him? Abridged by the author. Simultaneous hardcover publication from Ballantine. 4 cassettes.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY WACKY AND WILD..., May 13 2008

This review is from: Tick Tock (Paperback)
This book is delightfully quirky and a quick read. Part screwball comedy and part horror story, it will make you laugh and it will make you want to keep the lights on. Filled with rapid, quick fire repartee and lots of non-stop action, I read it in one sitting, as I simply could not put it down, even though it was not at all what I expected.

Tommy Phan is a successful novelist of detective stories. Unfortunately, his Vietnamese mother doesn't see quite it that way. She feels that he is turning his back on his Vietnamese roots, as he has Americanized his name from Tuong to Tommy. He did not wish to become a doctor or work in the family business, as did the rest of his brothers. Tommy is living the American dream, which his mother simply will not accept.

One evening, shortly after returning home, his doorbell rings. When Tommy answers it, there is no one there. He does, however, find a homemade rag doll on his porch, which bewilders him, as he cannot imagine who would leave him such a thing. Taking the doll into his home, the doll's stitches start popping, and so the fun begins.

It is a little more fun than Tommy bargained for, and he flees his home with something evil in pursuit. Ultimately, he runs into Deliverance Payne, a beautiful seemingly intuitive blonde waitress, who gives him a hand in evading his demonic pursuer. She is certainly more than a sum of her parts and is not what she initially seems. Let the games begin! Tommy's life will simply never again be the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre, Funny, Romantic!, Jun 12 2011

This review is from: Ticktock (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a very quirky novel with very quirky characters and funny moments that had me laughing out loud. For the first quarter of the book I was left wondering what is going on? The middle section I was caught between laughter and suspense. The final section was non stop action adventure at it's best.

Koontz has created a cast of very interesting characters. Characters who have both outlandish and compelling personalities.

This novel moves very fast especially for Koontz who can drag a little.

It's a short little book with a tonne of character. No need to hesitate buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tommy Phan's got some problems..., May 30 2004
This review is from: Ticktock (Mass Market Paperback)
First, there's his mother, who thinks that his job as a detective writer isn't traditional enough for his Vietnamese heritage. Then, there's the doll he finds outside his door. It's ragged, and rather ugly...but he takes it in.

That's the biggest mistake he'll ever make. And maybe his last.

The doll is hiding something. Something that is alive. Something that wants Tommy dead. Something that has the capabilities of slaughtering him. Something that is growing...

Dean Koontz is the master of suspense, no doubt about it. In "TickTock," he tackles another genre: horror comedy. Yep, this book's downright hilarious in parts...and yet completely horrifying elsewhere. All throughout, suspense reigns supreme. "TickTock" is a nonstop action/horror/suspense/comedic novel about a man's strugle to stay alive and save face. Engrossing.
