Tigana is the internationally celebrated epic of a beleaguered country struggling to be free. It is the tale of a people so cursed by the dark sorceries of the tyrant king Brandin that even the very name of their once beautiful home cannot be spoken or remembered. But, years after their homeland's devastation, a handful of men and women set in motion a dangerous crusade--to overthrow their conquerors and bring back to the world the lost brightness of an obliterated name: Tigana.
Against the magnificently realized backdrop of a world both sensuous and brutal, this masterful novel of a passionate people pursuing their dream is breathtaking in its vision, and changes forever the boundaries of fantasy fiction.

A romance, a quest, a coming of age... while not being stereotypical,

This review is from: Tigana (Mass Market Paperback)
One of the criticisms levelled at fantasy fiction is that it lacks the depth, the imagery, the human context of true literature. Fair enough. I'm not going to try to argue that case here. But I will say that Tigana is more than an escapist experience. Don't get me wrong, I don't use the term "escapism" perjoratively - I think that reading for escape is a damn good reason, and certainly one that I employ. But Tigana... Tigana is something else. The novel is occasionally epic - it has its grand battles, and climactic turning points - but at times it is deeply personal, and it makes the effort to chronicle the painful transitions that come with the passage from youth into adulthood. It has echoes of the medieval world, as well as ideas of high fantasy. The novel has twists that genuinely shocked me, and I usually see such things from a mile away. In the end, ironically, descriptions fail. You need to read it for yourself, because magic cannot always be carried through words.
